I would take every precaution against lightning.
If lightning never strikes, then you can either claim it was a waste of money OR that you are sure getting your money's worth.

Certainly. Lightning Rods are inexpensive and still the best way to protect your home from lightning damage, which would be far greater in dollar value than the cost of the rod.

I live in Conroe TX and I don't believe I have ever seen a house
with a lightning rod..

Since you are building in Texas, chances are it will get hit by tornados before the lightning gets to it.

I would think so, I lived in New Mexico and there is a lot of lighting.
Houses on hills like mine are expected to be hit, it's like saying ..... look at me, here I am. I believe that my lighting rod saved my life a few times.

The electrician who wires your house will run a ground wire from your house's panel box out to your main water line and that will protect your house from lightning strikes

Definitely not a waste of money and may even be a requirement under local building codes. Besides this is easily done yourself , don't cut corners when it comes to safety.
