I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 that is less than a year old. I have all the latest Microsoft updates, and I have McAfee and other virus and spyware programs. My computer is virus-free. It seems to run fine until I try to shut it down. It freezes (about 60% of the time) when it gets to the point "windows is shutting down" I can't even just press the power button. I have to unplug it and take out the battery to get the computer to shut off. Any suggestions on what's wrong??

What Operating system are you using? XP? There is probably something that is constantly running in the background and refuses to close.
Sounds like you are on the right track: Virus scan, Spyware programs.

Here's a side trick. Hold your power button down for about 10 seconds. it should shut off your computer/laptop

Go to Start>All Programs>Admin tools>Event Viewer
Click on the application error logs and if you find event ID 1000 or 1517 or 1524, then you could benefit from the User Profile Hive Cleanup tool
This resolves problems with unloading your user profile at shutdown. This can happen when third party, or even Microsoft applications have not properly cleaned up when exiting. Windows will keep trying to unload the profile until Windows finally decides that it can't and should shutdown. Even if you find the application causing the problem - it may be impossible to do anything about it. This free utility automatically cleans up user profiles and prevents you from playing the timeout wait game.

You can download it free here

Once installed, you will have a new service enabled which SHOULD help your pc shutdown more smoothly.

Hi,

I had the same problem before. I can tell you that if you hold the power button down for about 5-7 seconds it will shutdown with out unplugging and taking out the battery.

I corrected the problem on mine by putting in the recovery disk and reinstalling the original software package.

It has to do with some sort of conflict and Windows can't get some "behind the scenes" programs to shutdown.

I think that happens when it unloads all programs from memory (either Virtual or RAM or both), clears its registers and stuff. Most probably you have lots of programs installed on your system. If your OS is Windows XP, I suggest that you let it go into hibernation instead of shutting it down.
