Electric clippers will make it less likely that you'll... do yourself injury.
There are some mistakes we can never make right. Slicing off your Johnson is one such.

In the shower, with a fresh razor, conditioner, and short strokes.
Use the conditioner like a shaving cream to soften the hair.
Carefully grasp a small amount of hair in one hand and pull gently away from your body.
Use the razor in your other hand to cut the hair using a stroking motion from knuckle to body, or body to knuckle. This can help reduce the prickly itchy feeling when the hair grows back.
Take your time, and rinse the razor after every two or three strokes to ensure a good, clean trim,
Continue until trimmed to your satisfaction.
Getting everything even can take practice.
If you want to go right to the skin, that's your choice, although you may not want to do that right away. Most times a trim is all it takes to help you look tidy and reduce "flossing" issues with your partner.
If your partner is willing to help, that can certainly make things a little bit easier as they will be better positioned to see everything.

Though I am not a man, this is what I do. I buy a really thick hair conditioner and use a new razor. I don't get bumps or irritation doing this, and I've done it for years. Be slow and stretch your skin out, meaning pull up on the pubic area so to make the skin taught. It makes shaving easier and you have better control over the razor. I've been doing this for twenty years and only have I cut myself down there once. I discovered the thick conditioner about ten years ago. Use a washcloth to wash daily down there so you exfoliate and prevent ingrown hairs.

Use alot of shaving cream- or have your woman do it:)- You should at least trim it though!!!
