I just got a root canal and was pleasently surprised that there was absolutly no pain! I'm getting a crown put on in a week, so what is that like?

They will grind your tooth to a post and put a fake tooth over top of it that will look like the original tooth. You may need to have a temporary one while the real one is formed based on a mold or they may do a "cerac" which is a computer program that allows them to make the crown while you wait.

A crown, or cap as some people call them, it a prosthesis placed over a natural tooth to restore it to ideal function. It's sort of like putting a metal or ceramic helmet on the tooth. With teeth that undergo root canal therapy, especially in the back of the mouth, they are weakened by the access preparation made into the center of the tooth. This weakening predisoses the tooth to breaking and even worse, splitting.
When the tooth is prepped for the crown, then dentist cuts and shapes the tooth to maximize it's ability to hold the crown in place. One cannot simply put a crown on a tooth without reducing it in size first because all you'd be able to bite on would be that tooth. And that would be very painful.
Gold crowns are the best for the teeth because they allow less tooth structure to be removed, so they are the most conservative. Ceramic and Ceramo-metal crowns look better obviously, but require 2 mm of space between it and the opposing tooth where gold really needs about 1/2 that much.

It is a fake tooth top that is epoxied into place. No big deal. You are already past the bad part. Oh, you could be getting a temporary crown since dentists like to hold up for a year or so to see that there is no dirty bits left in their work that might cause an infection. It depends but expect a temp crown.
