Well, we know it's fiction.
It includes some fictional accounts of actual events, however. This leads some people to say that since "Jericho" actually existed, for example, then the stories must all be true.
This is akin to saying Frankenstein is a true story because it took place in Europe.

The word 'lessons' does not have an 'i' in it.
The question you are asking is: Do we read the Bible literally as written or do we read it figuratively?
Just because the Saviour used parables to make His teaching more understandable, that does not make His teaching fictitious. He used examples so people - like you and I - could understand.
Except for the books of prophecy regarding the future (Isaiah, Daniel, Jeremiah, Revelation), most of the Old Testament was historical.
More than half of the New Testament was written by the hand of Paul, who used to be a pharisee named Saul. Saul was making a good living capturing Christians and delivering them to the Jewish authorities for torture and execution before he was converted (see Acts 9). Paul wrote Acts, Romans, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Colossians, Philippians, Ephesians, 1 Thessalonians, 2 Thessalonians, 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, Titus, Philemon, and probably Hebrews.

For the most part the Bible is second-hand mythology.
I guess that makes it fiction.
