You are technically breaking copyright laws when you show a rented movie to large groups in public (even if you don't charge admission). Our church we not allow us to show them anymore. I'm not sure if you can buy a license to show them though.

no as long as you do not profit, say from admission or such, then you are not required to have a license. its just like inviting a bunch of friends over to watch a flick

As long as you do not profit from it then I do not think that it would be an issue.
It seem to be the same as when schools show movies.
Besides who do you think would really turn you in if it is for good intentions.?
