That is a tough question. You have many different types of Alcoholics. But if you want to know if for a person to recognize they are having the problem with drinking, then that's easy. If you :::

1) Drink alone
2) Prefer Drinking to socializing with friends
3) Hide How much you drink from others.
4) Think about drinking all the time.
5) People Tell you , your drinking too much.(But you don't like to hear that)
6) You hide liquor in your home in strange places.
7) Avoid social situations which do not include alcohol.
8) Your finances suffer, to supply your Drink.
9) Drink Early mornings.

These are just some of the signs that should tell a person they have a problem. But many people are in denial for sometime before they actually accept they have a real problem. They call Alcohol the Great Remover, Because It Will Remove All you Care For In Your Life. Help should be sought immediately if these signs ring a Bell.

Good luck, I hope this helped. God Bless.

I believe it depends on what type of alcoholic the person is. You see, I think that there are two kinds. There are the ones who I like to call genetically alcoholics and those who I like to call social alcoholics.

Genetic alcoholics physically cannot stop themselves from drinking once they start. (Like yours truly) Social alcoholics are those who have become addicted because they have drank so much in social situations to be comfortable. They have used the alcohol as a social crutch and now cannot do without it.

There is no one thing that you can use as a barometer. For example, I was a fully operational genetic alcoholic. I had an awesome career, purchased a home by myself, drove a nice car. Seemed perfect to everyone. Some people cannot function like that when they have "crossed that line" because they were not born with this disease. You see, born an alcoholic, I learned to do everything while I abused alcohol regularly.

A social alcoholic may be more likely to lose things in life as a result of their alcoholism because they previously functioned with "a full deck" so to speak.

Anyway, if you are concerned about a friend, you can say something but don't expect it to have too much of an impact. If you are asking for yourself, well, I think you know your answer.

best of luck in any situation.

A person is an alcoholic when alcohol use impairs their life in some way. Such impairments include negative effects on their health, their work performance, their interpersonal relationships, or any other aspect of their life.

There are lots of warning signs that someone's an alcoholic--not being able to enjoy social occasions without a drink, drinking alone, drinking a 6-pack everyday, drinking at work, etc--but ultimately the question of whether or not one is an alcoholic boils down to whether or not it's screwing up their life.

If the drinking is effecting the people around the person - it's a drinking problem. It becomes alcholism when that person can not, or will not, change their drinking habits when it has become an obvious problem. If it affects no one but the drinker, well, that's their business, and I say "drink on" then. Just a personal opinion. If your question is serious though, get REAL help and answers from professionals, like AA.

If they won't go a day without a drink, don't understand why others don't drink, not sober for long.
