One of the best places on the internet to do genealogy research is on the website set up by the Mormon Church - they have an amazing set of records in their database, and it's completely free. It's a great place to get started!

Good luck!

Try the 1861 census for England and Wales, your local studies library should have the census, try a Google search for the surname as sometimes that helps with information, try Australian genealogy sites too some of them are really good, message boards on Ancestry.co.uk is another good source as there are message boards and hopefully someone else is looking at the same surname and doing research and could help you, hope you find what your looking for very soon and good luck

Hi,

You might begin with this web site:
http://www.nla.gov.au/oz/genelist.html
about Australian Family History and Genealogy: Selected Websites.

Also remember that Australia was populated by English prisoners to a very large extent. And that site has a 'convicts' site associated.

you could start by looking on a ancestry site or genes re united or one world, it is helpfull if you know the dates of birth death , marraige, on genes you can access passenger liner docs if you have the name of the ship, company, it does not cost a lot of money some records can be searched free.others you may have to pay , incidentally how did your g,g,g,randfather get to austraila, there may be records of him or his family if he was transported.

Start at this free site, thanks to the Mormons: http://www.familysearch.org

Look for census records and ship (immigrant) records - e-mail or phone the city hall (or whatever it's called) in each town you know relates to this person. Good luck!

It would be ideal if you could trace his wedding certificate if he had one as this might give you the leads you need.
