Romans 8: 2-4: For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending His own Son in the likeness of sin , condemned sin in the flesh. That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh , but after the Spirit.

The Law of Moses could not give true Salvation... That only comes through Jesus The Christ. For those who come to God through Jesus Salvation is assured for eternity... Under the old law... an animal sacrifice had to be made every year to postpone the judgment of sin against the sinner... if this was done faithfuly by the jew then at mortal death he would go to paradise, not heaven, to await the coming of Jesus... When jesus came and was sacrificed he went to paradise and released all who were ther to go to heaven... now...through Jesus... All who accept Him and go to god in The Way He has proscribed, do not havt to go to paradise, as it no longer exists, but go directly to heaven.

there's a lot more involved... but this aint the place to go into all that.

If you are not doing what God wants you to do, you are under the penalty of the law, which could be said you are under the death penalty. So what is the law of the Spirit? In very simple terms, the Ten Commandments. Without law there could be so sin and without sin there can be no death. So you could say that the Ten Commandments are a mirror that you can look to in order to see what sin is. IF you obey the law, you are not under the penalty of death but if you go against the law, you are under sin so you are under the penalty of the law which is death. If we walk according to the Spriit of God, we are doing what the law says so we are free of any penalty. The law can only tell us what we need to do so in that way it is weak through the flesh We are told not to walk after the flesh as that will bring us only death. So God sent His own Son to show that the Ten Commandments could be kept and to take the penalty that we deserve so that we can have the benefits that He deserves. The righeousness of the law is the perfectness of it that we do not have to sin and can be fulfilled in us when we do not fall into sin when we walk after the Spirit, or in other words we do what God wants us to do. We cannot walk in perfection without the Spirit.

What Paul is trying to explain to new Christians, is that they, like us now are "free" from the penalty of the laws of the old testament.

Remember, Jesus said that he came not to change the law. We still need to follow the laws. But the penalty for breaking the laws has been paid for us, by the perfect sacrifice of the lamb (Jesus)

Romans 8: 1
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Jesus Christ, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

The law of sin and death is the law of the old testament. When those laws were broken, you could do two things, you could make an animal sacrifise to atone for your sins, or you would receive eternal death. This should not be confused with mans interpretation and physical punishment for certain crimes.

man did then and still does, punish certain crimes here on earth.

The penalty that was paid and the penalty that we are now free from is the eternal penalty of GOD.

So if you do not accept Jesus as the perfect sacrifise for your sins, then according to the bible (God) you would still be under the old testament law, and thereby already have sentenced yourself to eternal damnation.

Hope this explains your question a bit.

Yes the laws of the Old Testament are very hard to follow to the letter. The flesh is to weak to follow the laws of the Old Testament. God sent his Son to be in the flesh did no sin. The law is no longer in words if you become a Christian but are in you. Paul said it best when he said the Gentiles was ignorant of the laws but yet followed them to the letter when they became Christians. God also said I will have a people I will be their God and they will be my people my laws shall be written in their hearts. These are the people that walk after the Spirit and not concerned about the sins of the flesh. They prefer to follow Jesus example when He walked on this earth.

Consider yourself to have spirit and flesh. Your spirit can be compared to being your soul. The law that is being described in those scriptures is that of the old testament. The law of the old testament was not strong enough to keep us from our sinful selves. Basically it is telling you that God sent his son down here to use as a sacrifice to destroy sin so that we could be the kind of people that he wanted us to be according to the bible. The bible was often refered to as the law. Your spirit is like your conscious, it will tell you no when you are doing something wrong. You have to strengthen your spirit to be able to defeat your flesh. Your hand wants that candy bar, that is your flesh. Your mind is telling you that you can't have it because it has to many calories, that is your spirit. When you become a christian you learn to live your life listening to your spirit and not your flesh. God is telling you that he has made it easier for you to be ruled by your spirit because he sacrificed his son for you.

To me, it says:
For accepting Jesus Christ into my heart, and obeying him, I am forgiven of my sins and and eternally saved. For the law of man was weak, and was only a piece God's will, and that Jesus came down and condem all sin even the sin that wasn't illegal to do. He did this so that we may be free of sin and full of God, and that we may seek after the spirit.

God gave us the commandments (the law) simply to allow us to realize that we were sinful and corrupt, and in need of a redeemer.

In fact, anyone who could live a truly sinless life, breaking none of the commandments, would not be liable to die.

But, to break even one commandment is the same as breaking the whole law, which leads to condemnation.

Jesus came and did away with the law, replacing it with God's mercy and grace.

Through faith in Christ and reliance on his grace, we avoid condemnation.

This is counter intuitive to the human mind, but perfectly logical to the spirit.

I think that it means that Christ's coming marked the fulfillment of the law of Moses (which was a very temporal law) and that now we follow the law of Christ, which is to live by the Spirit. The english is very complicated, though.
