A great marketing move to get users to upgrade (spend money)!

I think it's something they should have done back in 2003 when they wanted to. I seriously do not understand why people continue to use a dinosaur of an operating system. Even older systems can run Windows 2000. I don't understand why people use Windows 98 or even ME and we all know how... well... ME worked out now don't we. I feel no sympathy for anyone still running Windows 98, they should have upgraded long ago.

While it's a good idea on a personal consumer basis, there can be a problem for companies who do not need or can not afford to upgrade. While it may be ancient, Win 98 still provides many basic tools that are still useful today.

In my opinion, it is long overdue. Most graphic and design software is not even support for WIn 98.

to the poster above me, Has any of windows been a good operating system?

As much as I like to bash Microsoft (and believe me, its one
of my favorite pass-times), 7 years is a pretty good support
lifetime in the software industry.

The problem is, of course, that Microsoft is pretty damn closed
to BEING the software industry.

However, I am comparing it with other company's such as Sun,
IBM, etc. Although many such companies say they continue
to support the product, frequently the answers to all questions
turn into "Upgrade to xxx".

Of course, Microsoft's support pretty much acts that way NOW.

(Sorry, couldn't resist)

This is long over due. The microsoft guys need to focus their attention on newer operating systems and developmental applications for the future. Those using Win98 are going to have to wing it or upgrade.

Microsoft should open the source code to win98. There are a lot of apps out there that simply will not run on any other OS platform.

They cut support for ME also - it is hard to move forward when you are constantly having to support older technology.
