id say as soon as they are strong enough to deliver effective chest compressions...maybe 12-13? i cant see 8 year old kids or even 10 year old kids having enough force/muscle mass/body weight to effectively compress the chest and pump the heart...so as soon as they are able to harness their energy/body weight properly to make CPR effective rather than destructive, get them into a class.

My children are 8 and 11 and know the basics of first aid and CPR, of course I am a paramedic so they know a lot of things that many kids their age doesn't always know... it's really a matter of how much the child can comprehend as to when to start teaching them CPR but I think anytime after 8 years old is a good time to start making them aware because they may some day need to assist a grandparent who is ill and they will handle it better if they have some knowledge.

As a Red Cross instructor, we generally limit the instruction ot the age.

Younger children (early teens) can be taught Infant and Child CPR but are rarely taught Adult CPR because they have such a difficult time compressing the ribs and inflating the larger lungs.

However, there are no age guidelines and anyone that can pass the written AND practical tests would be certified.

As a parent- I'd wait until about 8th grade or so before trying it.

It is never too early for a child to learn some of the "basics" for what to do in an emergency situation. Like to call 911, know his/her address and phone number etc. I think my parents started making us learn more in depth CPR and safety skills when I was about 6 or 7. Children are very resilient and if you practice it with them, they will never forget it.
