Go to any golf course. Most have a practice putting green. A great way to start I think. Not only is putting extremely important, it will just get you used to the feel of the club. Then you can progress to the driving range. I'm sure there will be an old golfer around that will be happy to show you some basics. You'll find a lot of older retired men at courses during the day that have nothing better to do.

Learn a good swing - it will last you a lifetime. Learn to chip and putt - it is on and around the greens that games are won. Learn to drive straight, not necessarily distance, just accuracy. Learn never to lose your temper. Learn to listen and don't be afraid to ask someone to show you a certain type of shot if they are good at it. Read the following re putting:--
Putting Bad Putts Behind You:
Don’t blame your putter, the green or the rain,
Your hangover, the hunger or your stomach pain,
Accept the fact, you might then progress,
Your putting is bad, and you’ll surely score less.
Lets start at the start, let’s get your stance straight,
Eyes over the ball, don’t hit the ball – Wait,
Closer to your back foot, especially when damp,
Lock your knees straight, don’t think of the cramp.
Now loosen your hands, it near falls from your grip,
Now stroke the ball upwards, no, don’t move your hip
The same distance back, as the forward one,
You’re starting to get it, just don’t look so glum.
Try one-handed putts, every once in a while,
It’s easy, I told you, you’re starting to smile,
The balls they start dropping, you’ve cracked it at last,
If that’s what you thinking, just think of the past.
Putting is easy, the hole never moves,
Sometimes like rolling the ball down some grooves,
But if you are positive, and believe that you can,
You really have cracked it, my son, you’re a man.
Or are you a woman, who plays half a game,
There’s not that much difference, we’re really the same,
But when holding the putter, be gentle and kind,
And think you are holding – get that off your mind.
So believe in yourself, you’re putting is great,
As long as you putt less than the twenty-eight,
If regulation greens are quite easy by far,
Your score for each round, will be eight under par.
So try, try again, don’t read too much into it,
On damp greens, the ball only borrows a bit,
Be happy with pars, but once in a while,
A putt for an Eagle will earn you a smile.
Putting Is easy, I told you before,
Believe that it is, it’s quite easy to score.
But if you do not, to us you’re a menace,
Please stop playing golf, take up bloody tennis.

I'm 40 now, didn't swing a club till age 35, haven't played much at all, so here are my lessons:
1) listen to the instructor and do the drills s/he assigns.
2) repeat.
3) ignore advice from anybody else at anytime. you can go a very long way with just the basic fundamentals. On the flip side, if you want to mess with your partner's head, start quoting something you read in a magazine as you're getting ready on the first tee.
4) play golf. for me, this is WAY more valuable than hitting balls on the range because on the range you'll always spend time with the clubs you like to hit.
5) you'll naturally hit some clubs better than others. as long as you have an accurate club for the distance you need, that's cool - use the one you're comfortable with. Hit the shot you know you can make.
6) hit out of trouble. Meaning: if you shank it into the trees, don't go for the miracle shot to the green. Take the easy 20 ft chip out into the fairway (even it it's backwards).

Keep your head down.
Seriously though, you may want to go get a book and a video on playing golf, as well as lessons. I've tried some of these and every once in a while you find a little nugget of information that really clicks, helping your game a lot.
Finally, the only way to get really good at golf is to play often. If you can afford the time and money to play 3-4 times per week, you can really get good. Not too many folks can do that.

Don't let your frustrations get to you so that you become angry and quit playing. It's only a game and can be really fun it you don't take it/yourself too seriously. Good Luck!

NEVER HAVE TAKEN LESSONS, LEARNED FROM READING AND DOING... JUST TAKE YOUR TIME TO LEARN, THIS IS NOT AS EASY AS IT LOOKS SWING SLOWLY AND STAY WITHIN YOUR COMFORT ZONE... DO NOT TRY TO KILL THE BALL AND MOST OF ALL ENJOY YOURSELF...
