I'm just trying to confirm the mix of my dog, Cali. I got her about two years ago when my brother picked her up from the road at ten months old. The vet thinks she is a Chow/Shar-pei mix but I don't know. She has a partially black tongue with mostly pink. Anyone have an idea of what she is? Here are some pictures --

Thanks for all your help everybody but nobody seems to quite know, lol. I've uploaded some more pictures since everybody seems to like here, along with our bug.

We have it's twin down at my dog park - named Jesse. He's a German Shepard / Yellow Labrador Retriever Cross, possibly a bit of something in the mastiff line in there - hence the heavy brow/forehead.

I don't see any shar-pei or chow in her. The features are wrong, the coat is wrong - no dominant traits of the shar pei are there or of the chow. Doesn't even look like either of the breeds in any way shape or form.

Don't pay any attention to the dark spots on the tongue. Pure breds and all dogs can have them - it's considered a fault by AKC standards is my understanding, so if a pure-bred has them they cannot compete. I had a registered pure bred lab that had purple spots on the tongue - spots mean nothing. If it was full black mouth with black gums and full purple tongue, then you might have something.

Your vet needs to learn his breeds a whole lot better - seems that a few people on here need to as well.

If her fur is naturally that short, i highly doubt she has any chow in her, she might have some Shar-pei, but i'd think her face would be more wrinkled, She is probably a German Shepherd-lab mix or sometning like that maybe she even has some Shiba-Inu in her blood, from the looks of her build and color.

Looks like a good old Heinz 57 to me. Definitely has some Chow because of the tounge. I don't see any Shar-pei in it. Looks like it definitely has some Shepard in it.

I don't think she comes from two purebred parents. Most likely her parents were mutts too.

Shar Pei / Chow looks right to me! The only other breed it bears any resemblance to at all is a Shiba Inu or Akita. See Akita pictures below- what do you think?

i use to work for a vet clinic, so i've seen many dogs... the chow's are the ones with the purple tongues (mixed breeds are sometimes spotted), and she looks like she might have a little shar-pei by her face and color... she is a little big and KINDA looks like she might have some Rhodesian (sp?) ridgeback in her.

Looks like a shar-pei face (the coloring...but no wrinkles), and a german shepard's body!

She definantely does look like a Sharpei/German Shephard mix..But so many breeds can look similar in mixed breed dogs. I say just go with what makes you feel better.

she does look like she has Shepherd in her. Chows are known to come in two different coats the smooth and rough. So she could possibly be smooth coat.

Looks like she's got some german shepherd in her to me...in fact, quite a bit. Look at those ears!
