14:26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

The word disciple means to follow or more correctly "to imitate". Jesus was saying that we cannot follow him unless we follow him completely. Jesus life shows many examples of how he valued friends & family (both his and others).

NB - When Lazarus died he wept.
- On the cross one of his last acts was to ensure his mother and John would look after each other.

The gospels are the greatest story of all time. The most appropriate word to describe Jesus from them is compassion. You can see it at the centre of every parable and every miracle.
