I have a 9 mos old male Yorkie and he is so sweet. He is not yappy at all. The only time he barks is when he wants the cats to play with him and when they ignore him he quits after about 20 seconds and he doesn't shed at all. I don't think they would be good if you have very small children as the Yorkie's are very tiny and their bones can break easily if they are played with too roughly, jump off of couches or high places. Little children just don't realize how delicate these little guys are and I'd hate to see one get hurt. Good luck with which ever one you choose.

Yorkies are the best, they don't lose their hair or if anyone in your family has asthma.. they don't affect it at all. I have three.. 4 year old.. a 2 year old.. and a little 8 week old puppy.. fab temperaments.. but word of warning.. you need a slightly more robust dog if you have children. Tiny Yorkie.. noooooo way as they are very small and children would either stand on him her.. or someone would. . no doubt about that.. they have long hair that needs really good grooming..that can be very expensive .. I do my own as I have learnt how to.. (im pretty good lol) also sometimes have runny eyes.. so.. HIGH maintenance.. don't let anyone tell you any different. Not really for children.. just for you. I would advise that you wait till your children are grown up.. then get a yorkie.. or two.. or threeeee.. xx

In my experience a Westie has great difficulty with coping with too many people at once and would not make a very good family pet.
Yorkies - snappy - never met a nice one
shih-tzu - are lovely - but costly -
make sure you have pet insurance whichever dog you decide on.
what about adopting one from Battersea Dogs Home or somewhere similar.
mongrels can be the best family dog. Or Greyhounds,
Good Luck - and remember "A dog is for life"

I hear the Westie is very nice... Shih-tzu can be a bit nippy at times I don't know anything about the Yorkie. I just adopted a Bichon. He is such a sweet boy, loves to play with my kids (ages 4 & 6) Loves strangers... and loves to cuddle too. We are enjoying him as he really makes us laugh. I don't mean to throw another one in the mix but he really has a very friendly disposition.

all 3 of those dogs are know for barking and being nippy. a Havenese Is prolly the best temperment breed I've run into, it looks A LOT like a Shih-tzu. the best thing to do tho, is to look at TONS of the same breed dogs to find out which dog has the best manners around your kids.

My brother has a 7 year old shih-tzu and he's the best dog. He hasn't had any health problems. Of course, he was gotten from a responsible breeder.
I would also look into Italian Greyhounds and Basenjis.

i have a 6 yr old Yorkie who i adopted 5 yrs ago,he is a great dog very loving and would sit to be stroked all day if he could, they need regular grooming which can get costly and they also get very runny eyes, mine is a great guard dog and wont let any strangers next to me or my family, they can be snappy but with plenty of training they will be fine, they love exercises don't think cos there small that they will settle for a short walk because they wont,my Yorkie is great with my kids and he takes the rough playing great never had any injuries so i don't think they are as delicate as ppl say they are.overall i think Yorke's are the best and are great with kids as long as you train it right.hope this helps

Cairn Terriers are nice...
Yorkshire Terriers are pains... Literally... Once had to split three fighting and nearly lost a finger...
Shih-tzus are too much like hard work!!!
Try a small mongrel... Tend to be better temperament... And less likely to get stolen than pure breed!!!
