My mother had a dog named Sassy, she's a little Chihuahua, my mother has had her since 1997. On 7/19/06, she was let outside, to use the bathroom. Sassy always goes outside, but she never strays from the house, when she does. My mother has been wheechair bound, due to an accident, back in 1999. My mother's live in nurse, let her out, but when she looked to see if she was ready to come in, she wasn't there. We searched all over the neighborhood, by foot and car, with no luck. My mother is so distraught, she's cried her heart out since this happened, nothing seems to cheer her up. She told me that she misses Sassy, riding on the back of her wheelchair. Iv'e cried for my mother as well, what really saddens me is, my mother, will go to her huge day window and stare outside, hoping Sassy will pop up, but she hasn't.

Try to be understanding, show her you understand her pain and she's not alone in this. Also give her all the time she needs, doing that means giving her no pressure at all & being completely considerate of her needs before yours! Try not to get her a pet before she starts feeling upto it unless its a last resort.

"A new pet is just that – a new pet. He or she can never replace the pet you lost. If you decide to get another pet, you will be entering into an entirely new and different relationship. Be sure that you are psychologically, physically, and financially ready and willing to commit the time and energy needed to care for a new animal companion, without resentment or unrealistic expectations." http://www.petplace.com/dogs/coping-with-pet-loss/page1.aspx#

Also, i read some where that when you get a pet to help with the mourning of a pet, the new pet may become dependant on the owner's depression!

Meanwhile, try doing something unexpected for your mom, like buying her a single rose or your favorite candy... something like that.

Sorry for your loss, I too recently lost 3 pets around the same time, hope you have better fortune in the future. GOOD LUCK & HOPE I HELPED!! :0)

OMG....that's so sad. I know what you're going through because I just had to put my mom's dog down last week. She is still heartbroken, but the dog was sick with cancer. And believe me, I'm not over it yet either, but I feel I have to be strong for my mom.

For you: Advertise in your local newspaper under Lost and Found. Put flyers all over town. Call all your local shelters. Call the veteranarians in your area and post it's picture in all their offices. Did your dog have a tag on it...even a rabies tag?

Honestly, I'd give it a few more days. If the dog doesn't return, or if nobody finds it, get her a new one. I know your mom will say NO, but just do it. She'd be happy once the new puppy was in the house. Since she's in a wheelchair, she needs some company there with here.

I hope and pray you find Sassy! I know that it seems that no dog will ever be like her, but trust me, they will! Be there for your mom. That's what I did. I even had her stay at my house for a few days. It helped.

Best of luck!

oh, this is so sad! I am sorry for you and for your mom. I had this happen with a pet many years ago, and it is so hard to accept that they are gone when they simply disappear. I assume you've put lost dog signs up? Hang in there with her. It is important to know that it is okay to be sad and that the sad feelings will eventually fade and all of her warm memories of Sassy will still be there. When my mom's dog died, I made her a picture frame with different pictures of the dog, that seemed to help. She will remember both how she loved her dog and how much you care for her. She is probably really proud to have you as a daughter.

Sounds like someone in that neighborhood has Sassy. Put up flyers and go door to door. The effort will cheer your mom up, but if you don't find her, nothing you could do will cheer her for a little while. Just be there when she needs to vent her frustrations.

Put up flyers in the nieghborhood. Mail flyers to the local vets and pounds. Put ads on Pet Finder.com and in the newspapers.

Chances are that she was either stolen, picked up by a bird of prey, or gotten by a coyote/fox. Depends on what sort of neighborhood you are in and if you have a fence.

I'm so sorry for your mothers loss.

Lots of love for sure. I know things like this happen but am sorry for your loss. Spend time with your mother and talk to her - maybe even happy memories of Sassy. Time will heal all. Best wishes.

I hope she had dog tags on her. Call all the shelters to see if shes turned up. Go to petfinder.com. It's only been one day you guys can find her. Go ask your neighbors, put signs up. I hope you find her. If not there are many dogs in shelters that can be combaitbile with you mother. She could even get an assistance dog.

If you have any pictures of the dog make a scrap book for your mom and you two could go through it together and remember the good times she had with the dog!

Lossing a dog is sad. But like losing a family member, it just takes time to feel better.
