Shelling referes to use of artillery (sometimes can refer to mortar fire as well). The ammunition used by howitzers and cannon are known as shells. Normally shelling also refers to a prolonged engagement with the weapons. For instance if you were to fire on a target with one shell, you wouldn't be shelling the target. However, if you used multiple shells over a period of time, it would be called shelling.

Shelling is associated with cannonade which can be mounted on ships in turrents, tank howitzers, half-tacks, railway cars, or fixed mountsin bunkers and caves etc. The term shelling is in reference to the casing which can look like an oversized bullet except for the navy big guns and older models which used shot! Usually shot is considered different because like navy big guns the charge or powered is loaded seperately. A shelling is thus to undergo heay bombardment for shells as opposed to being bombed out!

Shells are like really big bullets. Shelling is to shoot these from really big guns. Similar in many ways to bombing, but from very large guns.

You know those guns you see on aircraft carriers? Those shoot shells.
