When I was on the tram the other day I saw a ladt get on the tram who looked about 60. I asked her if she would like to sit down. She started to have a go at me really loudly so that everyone on the tram could hear. She eventually took the seat but proceded to make comments every few minutes and I was given evils by every person on the tram.
Children are told to be respectful and polite to adults. But how am I and everyone else meant to do that if were scared that we'll get abuse shouted at us by people!?

Why was she pissed off? She didn't like the insinuation that she was being given the seat because she was older? Sheesh--what an ingrate! I have had that happen before and I still offer the seat to someone who needs it more than I do regardless because it is the nice thing to do. You cannot control how people will react, but trust me when I say this, more people will be grateful for your consideration than not. There are always a few bad eggs mixed in with the good ones. In your heart, you will feel good to know you were being nice, even if someone is rude enough to accept your generosity and then berate you for it at the same time. But then, that's how it is in the world. I am a firm beleiver in Karma--what you send out to the world will come back to you the same way. Be polite even if you want to strangle the person--because you are the BETTER person in that situation.

Maybe the other people on the tram weren't actually giving you the evil eye. Maybe they were just sympathetic to your situation and didn't know how to express it.

I'm sorry this happened to you. Unfortunately, you never know when your offer of a good deed will be rewarded in such a manner, but never give up. You will come across many many more that would be truly thankful and grateful for your generous offer.

But I agree .. would be real nice if some of the "adults" in society would practice what they preached to their kids.

That's odd; maybe she's going through menopause or something so she's extra crabby - lol. Normally when I'm polite to older people they respond in a positive way, so continue being polite and hopefully you won't get another crank case. Also, when older folks are really mean or rude, I can usually get a laugh out of it later. So keep your chin up and stay polite!

It does not matter.
You were polite and respectful to her and she failed to be a decent person.
Do not give up because of one moron.
I always treat people the way I like to be treated.
If that person gave me grief like that under those circumstances, I would then say well I was trying to be polite and you reciprocate with ignorance. So go find someplace else to sit as I am offended by your lack of manners.

Bear in mind, she was an example, not the rule. Some people forget how to be nice to anyone. I believe if everyone looked through the innocent eyes of the children, it would be a much happier world.

What the heck was she yelling about? Your politeness?

Don't put everyone into a little box because of a bad experience with a moody old bag.

Be YOU....if YOU are a naturally polite and friendly person, don't change for HER sake!

i think of which you're making this sort too lots of a try -- and that's not what Halloween is! somewhat of the "all or not something" physique of innovations, why not have "valuable" candy bars for the costumes which you particularly get excitement from and you sense like did a good sort of artwork, and in simple terms have so-so candy for those that did not attempt (i.e., the youngsters that ensue with a pillowcase and purple lipstick popping out the corner of their mouth!) remember, too, that some young little ones, counting on their age, are particularly based on their mothers for costumes -- so in the event that they have a hectic mom who in simple terms ran via the occasion save and offered a gown for the newborn, why punish the newborn?

old people tend to think they can say what they want for some reason especially if they were assholes when they were young.
Children are even worse cause they're taught that no adult can do anything about it and the parents let them. My father always told me if I'm rude to an adult then I better be prepared to get my *** kicked like one.

You did good. My momma taught me to be respectful to your elders, no matter what. I guess with old age they feel it is their place to do and say anything to anybody they want. All the old people I know are mouthy too. Your momma brought you up right.

Maybe this lady was just crazy! Sounds like it at least. Continue being nice and polite. Not all people are like her.
