They likely saw the calves drinking and got the idea.The same with goats and camels ect.They have been domesticated for ages,so they are ideal for milk compared to a wild animal.Other similar things that make you wonder is how we figured out a lot of foods and drinks.How did the old timers find out what was good for a headache ect.?Did they stumble upon these things by accident,or experiment a lot? This question could be used to wonder how people dicovered millions of things.

You, maybe? I seriously doubt that anyone has said that exact thing. All anybody would have had to do was to watch a calf nursing and know that what came out must provide nourishment.
