They listen when you want to talk and talk when you want to listen, they give you advice when you ask for it, they make you feel like you can do anything, they are there for you when you need them, they straighten you out when you are screwing up, they tell you the way things are. But beware when being supportive of someone in a romantic relationship, there is a fine line between supportive and doormat or foolish.

They make you feel supported because they care about you. There can be many ways of supporting people, and not all of them are in words, it can be a shoulder to cry on, or a pat on the back when something good has happened, it can be a friend that goes with you someplace that you just dread going by yourself.

The point is that they are there when you need them the most offering you whatever you need at that moment. I hope this helps you not only to recognize your friends, but to be one also.

Assisting, working with, being a part of, Help in problem solving, assistance in things you are not capable to do alone, or doing things you cannot do very broad definitions. you have hardware support, software support, support groups, who just help you vent and maybe give solutions to problem...But without the support your life would not run as smooth. Have a good one:-)

When I am supportive to somebody I make sure that I:
1) Stand behind them all of the time, irregardless of what they do or say.
2) Encourage and motivate them
3) Esteem them
Being supportive of somebody is basically telling them that they arent alone in the decisions they make or whatever they do, and that you will accept them and encourage them through anything.

They accept you as you are, not trying to change your basic characteristics that make you an individual. However they are there for constructive criticism that enhances and promotes your individual growth. They are genuinely happy for your successes and want you to continue achieving. Those that are not support always find fault, downplay your accomplishments or always seem to have to speak about their own during your shining moments. Your gut tells you when someone is supportive or not, listen to it.

that they give you advice when you need one, but whatever decisions you make even contrary to their advice, they will always be at your side and encouraging you that not all is lost, that every actions you take in life, everything has its consequences, always have a price to pay, some you pay more, some you pay less, but whatever or wherever it be he/she will be there on your side (physically or spiritually) to help you see it through.

Supportive means helping someone to feel safe, needed, loved, and appreciated. It does not mean agreeing with everything someone says or does.
