at this time no but after Dec 31, 2007 you will need one. The Departments of Homeland Security and State formally submitted the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative proposal for public comment. The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative will require all U.S. citizens, citizens of the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda, and citizens of Canada and Mexico to have a passport or other accepted secure document that establishes the bearer’s identity and nationality to enter or re-enter the United States by January 1, 2008.

It depends what country you are coming from. From the US, you do not need a passport but you will in 2008 because US congress just passed a ruling a few months ago that changes border rules. But for now, no passport. If you are from another country, I don't know???

Probably not to get in but to get back into the States you might want one to make things go faster. Not necessary though. Welcome to the North.
