I buy all my veg and fruit from market stalls in the High Street at amazingly low prices. Why do some people insist on paying through the nose at supermarkets?

I guess some people like to shop in hypermarkets where they are able to purchase all they require under one roof . I much prefer the more friendly way of visiting smaller shops.

Convenience maybe?? Not everyone has the time to go to market stalls, and not everyone has markets near them.

Also nowadays, certain fruit and veg can be found cheaper at the supermarket. The ethics behind how they get it that cheap is another matter, but still, a possible explanation.

A great many people associate price with quality, and in some cases they're right. If you happen to be buying furniture or appliances or cars, generally 'you get what you pay for.' Anyway, people have that in mind and, often times, avoid shops and stores that even hint at discounts thinking the merchandise will be low rate.

When I was young, my father worked in a meat market in Dallas, TX, and one week-end they ran a special on sirloin steak. Dad said that a woman came in and asked for several pounds of the steak, but when they charged her the sale price she became offended. She told my father that she didn't appreciate him trying to sell her that second rate meat that was on sale, and demanded he cut her order off the good stuff she knew they were hiding in the back of the cooler. Dad accommodated her. He went back and brought out a piece of the only beef they had, sliced her steaks from it, and charged her full price. She was happy as a clam.

Well my local market is on Tuesdays I do buy there but i might need a banana on thursday so I have to go the supermarket.
Plus markets can be daytime only and not everyone can get to them and depending on the market the supermarket can have better choice.

You are lucky. The last time I bought at a market stall I was horrified that the stuff I bought was about twice the price I'd pay at ASDA. And the veg at ASDA is always very nice.

Some places do not even have the market stalls. I have never heard of them, and everyone here shops at the supermarket. We have no choice.

Because the consumer is brainwashed by advertisements, and also they expect prepacked goods,as they are all uniform shapes and sizes,if you buy from local shops you can be sure that the goods are fresher than major chains because they are sourced locally, which means more money going into the local economy, which benefits all in that community

because shopping has become such a mundane activity it would almost be shameful to miss it out. supermarkets and malls are a great place to spend your time and, at least where I live, people would sometimes reserve their sundays to a couple of hours of shopping in a supermarket. so there you have your explanation. it's fun!

The one stop shop it's great
Also super markets have better quality and higher class fruit and if something is wrong with it you can take it back
