dont listen to some of these superficial answers
if you love someone then it shouldn't matter what kind of ring it is.
i am getting married in oct. and i just have a little ring, but i love it. my fiance and i have been living together for 2 years and have been dating for 8, and i know what he can afford.
i would kill him if he went out and spent a ton of money on a ring that doesn't really even matter, the wedding band is what matters, and that he wants to be with you forever.

the old answer would be 2-3months of the guy's paycheck. (i.e., if he makes $2K a mo., it should be $4-6K)
but these days, it could be anything. some people aren't even choosing to have an engagement ring. others are going all out for it. some people also choose to buy a smaller engagement ring with a small diamond, then wait until an anniversary to upgrade the diamond. the guy should get something that is pretty, but won't cost him an arm and a leg, for 2yrs while he pays it off!
plus, new marriages have enough problems without saying, "hey, where's the money for the grocery bill this month? oh wait, it's here on my left finger."
good luck! =)

A good jeweler will show you rings in your budget, just explain what your budget is.
My ring is a heart shaped 1/2 carat solitare that cost $1100. We put it on 2 different credit cards to pay for it, and because we were semi-poor at the time, we really should have insisted on seeing rings that were less expensive. The jeweler didn't balk at showing us expensive ones, even knowing we'd have to split the money up over credit cards to get it all done. He even put one on my finger that was $10,000. He never once showed us anything cheaper than $800, and that ring was hideous.
Basically, the ring can cost what you want it to cost. Jem size, color, shape, and setting all have a lot to do with the cost, as does the metal used for the ring.

Don't be average, get something that is meaningful to the two of you. Whatever it costs, it's what's behind the ring that matters. Same goes for the wedding.

i would say about 1 to 3 grand is about average, but it depends on what u want, quality of the diamond, and type of metal used to make up the ring

There is some rule, I don't know where it's from that the guy should spend two months salary on it.
But personally I think that is ridiculous. Especially if you are young, you can always get a bigger diamond once you are more established.

Whatever the person could be worth. This may sound cheesy, but it depends on how much he/she loves you.
Mostly likely, it can be $2000 and up. Want it to look sparkly and fancy, don't cha?;)
