I am currently moving out on my own and am interested in getting a dog. Which breed is best for someone living on their own to keep them company?

Go to your local shelter and you can look at all the dogs and pups there and you'll know as soon as you see him/her that its the one for you.

Don't spend hundreds of dollars on puppy mill dogs, that will most likely have health problems its whole life. Save a life and adopt!

First you should check with the place you are living to see if they have any pet restrictions. Then you need to consider how much time you have and how much space is inside and out for the dog. It's not a good idea to get a high energy dog and keep them enclosed in small apartment. Also is there a fence or place you can tie the dog so that it can get exercise and do it's business. I know a lot of people let their dogs out unsupervised but this put the dog at high risk for dangers. They can be hit by a car, attacked by another animal, and more. You should either chain the dog or put it inside a fence if you can't join it outside.

Personally I like big dogs, labs, pits, collies are my favorite breed. But bigger dogs require a lot of space and exercise. I think the best way to pick a dog is to look through the classifieds and go to the shelter. You can go meet the dogs and see if they will be suitable for you.

For an apartment I would get a small or medium dog that doesn't need very much exercise and wont tear everything up. Just be sure you know what you are getting yourself into. If you get a puppy you have to think about potty training, obedience training, walking, playing, feeding, teething stages etc. If you are looking for a lower maintenance dog try an older one from a shelter. They will already have manners and be potty trained etc. In any case a dog requires a lot of attention so be sure you will have enough time for them. Oh, also when you have narrowed down which kind of dog you want, be sure to do a little research on the breed so there will be no surprises later. Good Luck.

Depends on if you are living in a house or an apartment. A small mix breed is great for an apartment and company. Any Labrador would be great in a house. Several people suggested a Boxer. These are great family dogs, but they require alot of attention. So if you are not around alot they are not the best breed to leave alone.

Well,in my opinion, there is no better behaved, smarter breed then the Labrador retriever. I am 26 years old and have had a dog in the house since I was born, I have had 3 different breeds, one at a time, from puppies till they had to be put down as they got sick and old.I am now on my forth dog,and second lab whom I have had 3 years. I have been around many other breeds, while volunteering at shelters, but my boy is the most fun-loving,loyal,sweet,best companion and dear friend I have ever been around and could ever ask for. Get a Lab, they are heaven-sent!!!!!!

Before getting a dog, keep the following in mind:

-what type of person are you? (active, fashionable, quiet/secluded, etc). You don't want a retriever or greyhound if you're not going exercising with them. You also don't want a toy dog if working out is all you're going to do.

-What is your budget? Bigger dogs eat more, and if you're low-income, feeding them could be a problem!

-How much time will you devote to your dog? If you're not going to be home a lot, you might want to reconsider the whole dog thing and get a cat! They're much more independant.

-Do you have neighbors? (especially children). Kids love playing with dogs, but noise might be an issue if your dog is outside and barking (at night!)

There are many things to consider when getting a dog, and I wish you the best of luck in your decision!!

It depends on where you will be living, if you live in an appartment you might be able to get a dog, but if they allow it then you might want to get a small dog. If where ever you are going to live has plenty of room you might want to get a big dog. It really depends on you if you can handle a big dog. Do you have time for a big dog because usually they need more walking than a small dog but either way dogs need to be walked.

Below are links to dog breed selectors. You answer some questions about your lifestyle, what size dog you want, and if you want it to shed and it tells you what breed of dog will do the best with you. Try them all because they may give slightly different breeds and ask slightly different questions.

I would think a small dog, because since you're living on your own, a small dog would be easier to keep after, and also, if you were going to the beach or somewhere, they would easily fit in your car. Norwich and Norfolk terriers are really cute---- check them out.
