Jog alot! Running and marching will take a lot of your time at Basic. If you can't swim, learn! One of the Oddest things when I had Basic at NTC San Diego( Next door to MCRD) was guys joining the Navy & could not swim(I mean ships are in water, duh).
Do that stuff and thats half the battle. Hopefully your fellow recruits are not **** ups. Otherwise, expect lots group PT punishments...

I have a few friends who are DEP's and they run, a lot. Do any kind of endurance training so you do not get winded when you do run 2 or more miles.

Parris Island and San Diego are both Recruit Training Depots.
Diego's usually referred to as "Hollywood Marines".

If you have any chance read the following books

Lt Col Dave Grossman On Combat , On Killing, the view the site
killology.com.
It will give you some understanding about your training, war, your duty, and what to expect in a fight.
I am 36, not a US citizen, and were 5 years in active combat in war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
There is a lot of truth there, and I have found many descriptions that described similar experiences in my life and life of my collegues.
Good luck, and peace to your mind.

HA HA HA, yeah sure, run around and do pull-ups, whatever, but if you take anyones advice, I BEG you to take mine: Enjoy your life to the fullest before you get on that bus. Actually youll prolly go to the recruit station, get in a van, stay in a holiday inn express, get on another Van at 4am and fly to San Diego only to get on another bus, but after that, your life is over. ENJOY LIFE WHILE YOU STILL CAN!!! But then do it. Dont wuss out. I left for San Diego 4 days after I graduated high school. Boot Camp is....a secret actually. You shouldnt know all the little tricks. Takes the fun out of it. But I promise you, on Graduation day, if you make it, you will be the proudest you have ever been in your entire life. Remember I said that. Youll see I was right. I actually just finished my enlistment...cant believe four years ago I was actually in your shoes...
