take your dog to obedience classes and learn something! it sounds like YOU need it more than your dog.

In my experience, the key factor is:
You have to obtain eye contact and give a command only 1 time. If they don't obey, there must be consequences (no hitting or beating). If they do, there must be a reward in the form of a snack or positive attention. Of course, the younger the dog the better. Also, make it a game. I use clickers

Unfortunately the dog sounds like he's just stubborn and testing his boundaries. You need to be firm with the dog, and make sure he understands what you are telling it to do. Make sure the dog knows that you are in charge, and that he needs to follow your lead. Don't hit the dog, because that will only worsen the situation.
I have two golden retrievers, and the oldest of the two acts much the same way. He listens, but much of the time he chooses to ignore us because he is getting lazy in his older years. His favorite trick is to roll over on his back when you tell him to come indoors, and when that happens we have to go over to him and grab his scruff to get him to move.

You have to teach him..He speaks a different language! Start with SIT...Push him into a sitting position on lead ..Tell him Sit when his butt hits the floor give him a treat or praise him....Go to some classes read some books..Its really fun once you get started...Yelling and Screaming do nothing so dont do that. Goodluck...

Remember that dogs are not born knowing english. You must train him. The first two linksare all you need to clicker train, a positive style of training that I use and love, The third link is all you need to learn to train using corrections. A negative style of training that I don't think works as well. They are both excellent sites. What you decide to use really depends on your personality and patience. http://www.clickersolutions.com/articles/

Oh my. There's so much that goes into answering a question like this one. Tone of voice, body launguage and no hitting or beating him.
Try reading Ceasers book, "Ceaser's Way" or take him to a basic training class. It will help with any dog, any age.

Well it depends on how much time you have to spend with him. I have had dogs all my life and it's just like having a child. You have to spend a lot of time with them for them to learn anything. if nothing seems to work then I suggest taking a class with your dog where you can learn together. A lady at my work went to one and it worked great. Good Luck!

listen to what, exactly? what are you trying to get him to do?
you need a quiet place to train a dog. If they are excited because new people are around or they are in a new place, they won't listen. Training sessions are best if they are kept short. Under ten minutes.

Hold up one of his favourite chews - he'll listen then all right. He doesn't get it until he sits and pays attention. Dogs will do anything for a tasty chew!

I USE A SPRAY BOTTLE WITH A MIXTURE OF 1/3 VINAGAR AND 1/3 WATER.
WHEN THE ANIMAL DISOBEYS SPRAY IT. THE SMALL IS OFFENSIVE TO THEM.
ALSO YOU CAN DO WHAT IS CALLED SHAKER TRAINING. FILL COFFEE CANS WITH PENNIES. WHEN THE ANIMAL DISOBEYS SHAKE IT HARD AND FAST WHILE SAYING NO.
AS WITH ANY METHOD IT WONT WORK IF YOU DONT MAKE EVERYONE DO IT. SO I ALWAYS HAVE MULTIPLE SHAKERS AND SPRAY BOTTLES IN MY HOME. I ALWAYS EXPLAIN IT TO COMPANY WHEN THEY COME OVER.
