At 16 your older cat has pretty much played all his play out. A kitten still has almost all of his play left. As long as there is no fighting leave them be. The older one has earned his peaceful naps in the sunshine and lots of rubs, kisses and treats from you. He may enjoy watching the kitten play, sort of like a grandmother enjoys watching her grandchildren LOL. The kitty probably still remembers mom so she doesn't mind being held down, ignored or shooed away. Let them work out their own relationship. I bet that very soon watching their interaction will bring you lots of smiles!

Give them both a rub and a nuzzle from me!

Hi, well first off, u brought home a new pet after having the other for 16 yrs. Think about how he/she must feel. The 16 yr old is set in his/her ways and trying to figure out who this stranger is trying to play him/her. Unless the older cat is harming the younger cat, there really isn't much u can do. Let them be and maybe the older cat will come around. Just like any other animal, they have to have time to get used to each other. U'r older cat really needs time to get used to the fact that he/she's not the only one around anymore. Good Luck

Personally, as long as there is no real hostility, I'd say leave them be. Animals tend to figure each other out after awhile. Most likely, your older cat will find a way to let the little guy know just how far he is willing to let him go.
There may be a hiss, growl, swat or two but, all in all, the kitten will probably be great for the older fellow - keeps them young!

I agree, theres nothing you can really do. Just give it time. If yoru older cat is going to accept him it might take a while for them to get used to each other, if he wont accept him then theres nothing you can do about that. When I brought a new kitten home to my older cat the first thing he did was hiss at the kitten and batted him the whole way across the kitchen floor!! It took about a month or so but he finally warmed up to him and now they are inseperable!

You have a grumpy old man and a toddler -- the behavior is normal. YOU need to play with the kitten as much as you can to give him that playtime requirement and so he won't bother the older cat so much. You also need to make a point of giving the older cat special attention so he doesn't feel pushed aside for the new baby. They do respond to that -- if they feel like the little one is taking away their attention, they'll come to hate the little one. You can build toleration to some degree by YOUR behavior.

Good luck.

Not a cat person here, but as long as there's no bloodshed they'll work it out. A 16 yr old cat probably isn't much intereted in playing rough. Your next option is to get another kitten for the first to play with :)

just let them be. your older cat is annoyed, your younger cat is hyper. Just think of it as if you had a tag along little brother.
Separate them if the older one starts to harm the kitten.
Congratulations on your new kitty....have fun.

Older cats tend to be territorial and not want anything to do with the young kitty. I had this happen with my cat. I just left them alone, and I ended up catching him playng with the kitty. He looked at me, like you did not just see that ! Just let them go, I think they will be all right.
