Okay, if you were a muslim living in Lebanon, would you truly go outside and demonstrate against them? No way, you'd be dead in 30 seconds! That's the thing, if you go against them, you die, or your family dies, seen as traitors to Islam.

Islam is a complex group of people. Different groups stress different beliefs from the Koran. Like the Bible, if you take certain passages literally or interpret them in certain ways, it can be used to justify violence and hatred. I think most Muslims want peace and co-existence. Some of the groups seem quite doctrinaire and rigid, But then so do some Christian groups. It isn't really part of the culture to demonstrate or protest against others who profess Islam. There are some outspoken Muslims who publicly disagree with extremism. I think the media is slow to talk about those who do protest. They go so far in attempting to appear unbiased that they are actually biased in the other direction!

If you take a look in history, you will see that wars have been carried out in the name of god forever. Take the Crusades for example. Back then, it was not considered a "Crusade", it was considered a Pilgrimage, although it was a military pilgrimage. Nobles sold everything they had to go on this "pilgrimage" and commoners died of disease and starvation by the thousands to go. They really truly believed they were doing gods work taking Jerusalem and when they did, they slaughtered every single Muslim man, woman and child. When Jerusalem was surrendered to the Muslims a hundred something years later, the people had to buy their freedom and thousands were not able to and were taken into slavery by the Muslims. Demonstrations like what we do in the United States was never allowed until 250 years ago, and nobody really cared in the states until the Vietnam War.

Is Christianity really a religion of peace? It's history would argue otherwise. Any religion can be used to justify violence--pretty much every religion *has* been used to justify violence. It's a comfort to believe that God is on your side when you're engaging in a lethal conflict. This is true whether you're in a foxhole or sitting behind a desk thousands of miles from the fighting. Of course, the other side often believes that God is on *their* side too.

None of the religions are really peaceful. They are inherently totalitarian. Sam Harris has a good book about that.
