Army Slang

It actually originated in the Navy. In the old days Navy ships were sailing ships so they usually had a wind pushing them along. The bathroom was located at the front (head) of the ship because the prevailing wind (from the back of the ship) would push the smell away from the crew. Full metal jacket was about US Marines not army and as the Marines are actually a department of the Navy (they were and to a point still are the Navy's fighting force) they adopt some of the Navy's terminology. Bulkhead for a wall is another example.

You answered your own question. Latrine. In the Naval Services, i.e. the USMC, Coast Guard and Navy you are correct it is a Head. But int he Air "Farce" it is called a restroom.
