I am looking for a police job in or around Chicago. I hear about officers being shot but is it really dangerous?

While it is true that being an officer is dangerous it is no more so than any other job. Stay alert. Learn to protect yourself and use your common sense (and a few extra you will pick up along the way) and wear you vest.
This site is for our fallen officers. As you will see if you visit not all are to gun fire.

depends on where you work I say. The bigger city, the higher the crime rate. And yes, being a police officer is dangerous, but it's also a really good and prestigious job that you should be proud of. Not all deaths come from gunfire. I lived in a town of 30,000 people and one of my officers was stabbed (luckily it was not fatal, but it easily could have been) We had plenty of fights and pursuits and you are definitely in a high risk category job. You have to be comfortable in what you do. We also had an officer (female) who was like 4 ft. 10" and she was secure enough to do her job, so make sure you have the confidence because that is what will ultimately fail you if you are in a dangerous situation. You also have to look at it the other way and be prepared to shoot and kill someone if it is absolutely necessary. Good luck!

You would have to check out the numbers. Last time I looked it was more dangerous to be a construction worker of truck driver.
They just don't have the lobby group cops have.

Nope. Not dangerous at all. That's why you have to wear a Kevlar vest, carry a side arm and have a shotgun in your cruiser.

DUH.

It all depends on your views of being shot.
