I just got a yorkie 3 weeks ago (she's 12 weeks old now), and she's very, very smart. Within the first week she was housebroken (both pad & outside), leash-trained, crate-trained... and even knew how to sit!

However, she hates being left alone (even when I'm in another room) and cries a lot when I'm gone. (She's a good watch dog though-- she's not afraid to attack other large dogs!) Yorkies need a lot of attention. Also, their hair needs to be groomed everyday. Some Yorkies are prone to bronchitis and early tooth decay, poor tolerance of anaesthetic, and delicate digestion.

(If you're going to get one, don't get the "teacup" ones or ones under 2 lbs because their bones are so fragile and they are more likely to get more health problems when they get old.)

Some good things about her though is that she doesn't shed, she is very small and good for my apartment lifestyle, and she only barks & growls when she is playful.

I've heard that yorkies can be stubborn, aren't good with small children, hard to housebreak, and they're the breed closest to a human baby... but remember, every dog is different.
If you have the patience to groom, train, etc., don't have children under 6 yrs old, and you're willing to be with the dog 24/7 for the next 6 months, go get one! :)

I've owned two yorkies in my lifetime both female and both adopted at 8wks. They were equally protective and barked to alert me of any unusual goings on. Yes, the coat and teeth were the most difficult aspects of care. Training was no problem in either case. They both seemed to enjoy getting my undivided attention and being the only animal in the house. The biggest advantage to owning a yorkie over any other dog I've ever had is the fact they do not shed.

I owned a gorgeous yorkie for about 9 months. He looked as though he could have been on a magazine; however I had 2 small children at the time, and he was just a puppy. He was very very hard to potty-train. Kept pooping on my floor no matter how many times I took him out. (a femail might be better in this area) He had to be groomed every month because yorkie's don't shed- which is a great thing- but their hair keeps growing and growing. You need to brush them all the time, or they get knots. They are hyper little things. He snapped at my small chidren alot, so if you do get one, your children should be older, or have no children, because they love attention- they love to be the "baby". High-maintenece little things, but they are gorgeous!!!

Grooming must be done on a regular basis. Although the coat is easy to care for it is time consuming and necessary in order to keep your dog in healthy condition. The Yorkshire Terrier can easily be injured by small children; if you are considering a Yorkshire Terrier you must be able to supervise the dog around small children. The Yorkshire Terrier is an independent dog, but a devoted companion. Despite his small size he is more than willing to act as a guardian for his master.

Yes I have a Yorkie puppy. She so cute but for such a small dog she has a BIG attitude! They are really active and alert dogs and they are lots of fun.

No, but they're so cute. Only get your dog when you do all the research first. Don't get a dog and know nothing about it. Reasearch before u get it.
