My friend from there says, that she usually has mashed potatoes with soured cream and not roast potatoes, when they have roast chicken, beef etc. If this is true, why is that?

My God! I didn't know I was going to offend so many people. I wasn't judging. Just asking. Sorry I breathed

We like them a lot. I eat them at least once a week. Your friend is correct as very few restaurants serve them.

Americans think that any potato cooked in the oven is a roast potato, and can't get their heads around 'roast potatoes' being a different thing to 'baked potatoes'. It's Christmas and I have been having this argument a lot recently! I cooked roasties for xmas dinner in the hostel I am staying at this year and for my American friend's family last year and no Americans had tried them before. They probably would eat them if they knew how to cook them!

Well we may not have all the fixins that you have but we have most of it. Roast is very popular here, I usually make mine in a crock pot with potatoes and carrots and onions. We might have some biscuits or corn bread to go with it. My grandma always makes mashed potatoes and awesome gravey, she roasts it in the oven too. Add: Well it sounds that way but I usually drain the water out and it leaves you with tender roast and tender carrots and tender potatoes, usually add butter and salt and pepper to the veggies. That's just an easy way to make it and it's really good. Everything is left in tact while it cooks so it's really not a stew at all :)

I think it's just your friend's preference because I love all kinds of potatoes ~ roasted, mashed, chips etc... I think the mashed potatoe and chicken is a "southern/midwestern" thing. Is your friend from the South?

I only saw "roasted" potatoes on the Food Network.
I've never personally cooked them that way, unless I'm putting them in the baking pan with the chicken or pork chops.
I'm sure there are many people that use that method to cook potatoes.

i guess that depends on which American you talk to. mashed or baked is usually the most popular way it's served in restaurants, but my mom has fixed pot roast with roasted potatoes on sundays since i was a kid. it might not be as normal as baked or mashed, but the only thing you should generalize about americans and potatoes is that we love carbs (breads, potatoes) and eat them every way you can cook them!

We eat plenty of baked/roasted potatoes. Your friend just happens to prefer them mashed.
