Ok, so maybe including "everyone" is a bit extreme. But look around, the lack of spelling ability as well as the lack of grammar is getting ridiculous!

BTW, when I say "lack" of grammar. I truly mean "lack of". Nobody uses any. They don't even use capital letters anymore!

And I severely disagree with the excuse that when you are online it does not matter. If it does not matter when you are writing and using speech, then when does it matter. How hard is it to put your finger on the shift key? How hard is it to use a comma or question mark? How hard is it to click a little button which does the spelling for you? Sometimes I read a question and cannot understand a word the person is saying. My goodness, soon we are all going to be living our lives in silence because we are going to get so stupid we do not have the ability to speak!

P.S. "How Come" was an example, when I submitted it , it was abbreviated!

You are a complete idiot! However, I did want to congratulate you on realizing this little fact all on your own! Bravo, Bravo!

And I cannot believe how few of you are not bothered by not being able to read some peoples questions & answers because they do cannot spell. You are the reason so few people these days strive to be better.

(slow clap, clap, clap)
The only thing you have to look out for is people from other countries, where English isn't their main language, (that got me into quite a pickle.)
But other than that, yeah, the use of the English language is slow, no, rapidly degrading. How hard is it to use the "Check Spelling" button? When I was growing up and I asked my dad how to spell something, his answer was always, "Look it up!" I've disabled the spell corrector on my Word, just so it forces me to proof-read everything.
You my dear, are only pointing out the obvious. And yet, at least you recognize this growing dilemma. Bravo to you!

For the sake of this response I shall endeavor to use proper capitalization and grammar. In the Cyber realm there has been an understood "relaxation" to the rules of the written language that we were taught as children. From the evolution of early chat rooms, to message boards, text messaging, etc, people have attempted to establish a shorthand of sorts to make there time on-line more efficient and enjoyable. I doubt that the Internet would be as popular if everyone felt as though they we're expected to type a doctoral thesis every time we logged on. So, certain rules, such as capitalization, have been overlooked to simplify the on line experience. As far as the spelling errors, some people are just f***ing stupid.

Don't be a slave to grammar. Grammar is an instrument to make your speech clearer. But if you can make yourself understood without the grammar, then who cares if you didn't follow the rules? And the same applies to spelling.

By the way, there IS no such thing as "no grammar". That's a technical impossible! You may change the rules, or go by wrong rules, or ignore the rules, but it is impossible not to use ANY grammar... That concept is so unconceivable that I don't even know how to say it.

Finally, and as an English teacher, let me tell you I'd rather have students with poor grammar and bright ideas, and not students with perfect grammar and not one original idea. Grammar is learnt (if necessary). If you lack ideas, there's little that can be done about it.

People are probably in a rush to be the first to answer the question. Sometimes, I have to admit, that I am and some may feel that spelling isn't that important, but it can be. Sometimes I have to read something over and over until I can understand it. It gets annoying when the 'check spelling' is right over the answer box and people are in such a rush or too lazy to use it. I always try to use it.

Country boy tries to use proper spelling and grammar. But you know, after spending a lot of time on this site and trying to decipher all this gibberish I tend to fall in with the group. I know that is not an acceptable excuse but as my daddy always told me,a poor excuse is better than none.....

I have the same complaint. I was not even born in this country and spell better then the natives. It is disgusting to see so many mis-spelled words considering there is a free spell check. I wonder what type of education some writers have?

I do - I think everyone has become accustomed to using IM "language" and due to use thereof, most of society has completely forgotten how to use proper grammar! Reminder to everyone out there: Check spelling (the blue words above your response box) does just that.....it checks your spelling! Amazing, I know!

I wholeheartedly agree with you. Yahoo includes a "Check Spelling" icon which should alleviate the problem. However, you have a punctuation problem with your sentence:

I truly mean "lack of". The period should be before the final quotation mark. LOL

Do you really mean' everyone'? I am sorry to accept this. Many learned persons are interacting and I have also gone through some answers where they used capital letters and they proved that they all are well versed in grammer.

A great percentage of YA users are thirteen year old products of American public schools. There also appears to be a sizable percentage of users for whom English is a second language.
