I breastfed my girl for 6 months. She got sick with the flu, a cold and an ear infection during this breastfeeding period. My cousins twins, whom she never gave one drop of breastmilk to EVER, has been on Similac from day one, even stayed with mine while my daughter was ill. They have never been sick, EVER. If breastmilk is supposed to be so fantabalous, why did my kid get sick on it? Now she takes Enfamil with iron, and she has never been ill once. Less gas too. What's the deal with that?

Let me try, and see if I get sick!
(Just kidding ~~ It was probably your diet of nutrients.)
Good question, though!

S*&T, It Happens. I never eat anything really healthy except some water and fruits. But I have a huge sweet tooth. It wasn't until I started giving my baby formula that my daughter got her first cold. What is so weird about breastmilk is, I went back to work and someone gave me the pink eye and I developed a lung infection. Went to the doctor to get antibiotics, a few days later I notice my 3 month old baby started to get crusty eyes and were pink. Because I was taking the antibiotics, she received them also via my milk and her eye cleared up in one day. So there are some benefits. I get easily sick (maybe because I don't eat well), but my daughter didn't catch anything due to her taking all of my antibodies. She did have a lot of gas, but as soon as I started cereal and solids that stopped. So BF has its benefits and sometimes it doesn't. Go figure.

Just because she got sick, does not mean your breast milk was the reason. Kids get sick for no reason at all. iI have a 6 and 1 year old. My 6yr old was formula feed, she had ear infection one right after the other, she was sick all the time. I breastfeed my 1 yr old for 9 months, she did not have any ear infections and got sick once, from her sister bringing home a virus from school.
Also, remember everything you eat goes through your milk, was it possible you ate something that she could have been allergic too, and that is what made her sick. If you had a virus, it is possible to transfer some of it to her through the milk.

Oh honey welcome to the wonderful world of mothering. I know that especially when you are nursing your baby you take personally everything that happens to your baby. With everyone telling how natural and beneficial to your baby you have a tendency to feel guilty when the baby gets sick or is unhappy.
Sometimes children just get sick, you will see a whole classroomful of children and they are all exposed to the same virus and some will get sick some won't.
If she is doing fine on formula that is the point isn't it you are being the best mother you can be. Good Luck and congratulations on being a good mommy.

I'm sorry that happened. It seems your daughter is an exception to the rule. I breastfed my daught up to almost 18 months. She has had about three colds in her lifetime (usually caught from mommy and daddy) and has only had gas/stomach pain once. Every child is different. Good luck for the future!

Breastfeedging does not ensure your child will never get sick, it merely transfers your body's immunities in part tothem. What this says is that your body's immunities did not protect the baby from those problems. The extra vitamins and iron in the formula maybe helping your baby more. Eveyr person is different.

She probably wasn't getting enough nutrients from just the breastmilk (she wasn't filling up/sucking it all out). It would have probably been best to supplement her diet with formula after the first month, but thats so easy most people just stick with the formula and forget the boob.

Well, good job on breastfeeding for 6 months. Statistically breastfed babies are healthier but it's only statistics. All babies will at some time become sick and really it depends on what illnesses they are exposed to and their own immune system. I do hope that you enjoyed your time breastfeeding and look back on time as something worth while.

BF ing does protect your baby but when your baby is young you don`t put them around sick people or in crouded places to be exposed to germs, and people need to wash their hands befor they hold the baby. This is just a sample of what needs to be done to protect your baby from germs.I did all of this and more and my kids were never sick.I BF for 1yr each both of my kids.

I doubt it was the breastmilk...every baby is different. I formula fed my daughter and she got really sick with meningitis. I breastfed my son and he also got sick with a disease called galactosemia.

Did you watch your diet during breastfeeding?
It is possible that it came from you.
It is better to breastfeed at least till the kid is 9 months old.
