Actually Christians believe in one God with three co-equal parts. The three parts are capable of operating independently, but rarely do, since God is a single unified being.
Several possible explanations for the Trinity; I will not try to cover them all, just my favorite. Keep in mind that a human can never completely understand God since he is something beyond our experience.
C.S. Lewis thought that the Son was begotten by the Father in the same way as a flame begets heat & light. The light of the flame is the natural "expression" of the flame that it creates by its very existence. So, God the Son is begat by the Father by the very existence of the Father (John, in the beginning of his Gospel, refers to Jesus as the "logos" (literally "word"), or "expression" of the Father).
And C.S. Lewis theorized that God the Holy Spirit might be the spirit of love that exists between the Father and the Son. It is the nature of God that his spirit has a life and mind of its own.

The basic fundemental Chrisitan belief is that there is only one God (also referred to as the Father, the Son (Jesus) and the Holy Spirit). However, within different Christian demoninations (such as Catholic, Latter Day Saint, Baptist, Evangelical, etc.) there are some differences of opinion as to if the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are all one and the same or three seperate beings.

Hi
Have you ever heard someone speak of a Triune Diety? That means three in one. So there is one God but there are parts of him that are also the Holy Spirit and Jesus. The only analogy I can come up with is this- We are made up of a body, we have a mind but we also have a spirit. How does that compare? Well God is the mind, our spirit is like the Holy Spirit and our body is like Jesus in the fact that he came to earth as a man. I hope this helps and remember this is just an analogy to help you understand the Triune Deity. :)

Your thinking of the holy trinity, which is a pagan tradition in christianity. Christians believe in one, all-powerful, omniscient creator--God. He has a divine son--Jesus, who was sent to earth via a virgin (Mary) and died on the cross for the sins of the world. The holy ghost is a strange idea, really, and I never understood it when I was a christian. Here's the Wiki article on the holy ghost: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_ghost.
Some christians think these are three seperate (or two, some don't really believe in the holy ghost) entities, and some believe that they are one, and God encompasses them all. There is only one god, though, for the other two (if seperate) are not considered gods.

convert!? That would assume there was something in you that you knew needed changing! The Creator,God, already had a purpose for you long before HE knitted your soul and body together in the womb of your mother. Christ(saviour),the Son of the Creator, planned and executed the Redeeming(purchase) from Sin [willful disobedience of God's will] of all souls of man throughout earthtime to enable the acceptance of freedom to return HIS Love for a Eternity. The Holy Spirit has been deployed via the SON to guide Mankind through a Sanctifying experience while still on Earth so as to lose the rebellious nature born in the offspring of ADAM( the first man).

It's called a "Trinity". "Tri" being the Latin root for 3. There is God the Father, Jesus his Son, and The Holy Spirit who is like their helper. But they are often refered to as three in one, or just "the Trinity". And we only believe in one God...God the Father (cause the others aren't necessarily Gods).

It's a bit complicated to explain. There is the Father, Son and the Holy Ghost/Spirit, but there is only one God.
The best way is to think about it like this: in Christianity, there is only one God, but that God has three faces. Sort of ...
Yeah, this is why I'm not Christian anymore. They overly complicate things LOL!

Christians believe in just one God. The Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit originated with the Catholic Church.

Chrisitans believe in 1 God, 3 persons...father, son, holy spirit. The term is a MYSTERY, becuase it's pretty much unexplainable beyond that, except that St. Patrick tried and came close with a shamrock: each "leaf" of a shamrock is a person, but the 3 leaves is really the one leaf.
