I play a game with my son called, "I'm going to [place] and you can come too if you bring the right two things." The person then states two things which give clues as to what the criteria is. My son's task is to try and guess the criteria based on the clues I've given by these two things. There are times when criteria is so generalized that several criterion can mimic or parallel what was intended.
The short of it is, one knows when one is right by how infrequent one needs to revise one's view.
How successful this process is depends on how comprehensive one develops one's views and the broadness of these view's application.

I usually follow-up, double check, and be open minded, and welcome all ideas on a matter or subject until conclusion is made.
Take the subject of Easter for instance. You would be shocked just how old the festival is and how it was intergrated into christian belief. I wouldn't have known without studying the matter. Pastors and priesst sure will not tell you about it. That's because it's something that will not 'tickle the ear'. Well hope this answer helps

You know you're right because you believe it. I know I'm right because I say I am.

There are 6.5 billion people on the planet, and 6.4 of them are idiots.
Hence I know I'm right when my views are in the minority. As long as my thoughts don't agree with the majority, I figure I'm on the right track.

Until I am proved wrong, I am right as I always try to ask my mind whether my action/thought/words are right or not based on my knowledge and I act/think/speak right accordingly.

Because I have not seen any evidence to the contrary.
When I do I might change my mind but I'm not holding my breath. No one can produce evidence that supports the existence of a magic sky-pixie.

I am right when I am in alignment with the Word of God.
Romans 12:2And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

That is the problem! You have to be humble enough to know you might be wrong, and admit it when you know you are, but still stand up for what you truely believe - a very very thin line to walk.

I remember the old Sergeant back home in Ireland shouting on the Parade Square: 'Left, right, Murphy, the right is the hand you bless yourself with'........... So that was how Murphy knew his right.
