Its the uniform...If you wore a uniform around the house, your dog would be fine with people in uniform.
dogs are afraid or aggressive to anthing that makes them uncomfortable....
try putting on a silly hat...your dog will act as if you are the mailman!
this person just walks right up as if they own the place, dressed all silly, never asks permission to come on the property..carries strange things, and keeps on walking! All very menacing behaviors..So, it must be an enemy!

I have heard that it is because these people come in contact with SOOOOOOOO many other people and smells that it is a threat to dogs when they are approached. My dogs have never had a problem with any kind of person in uniform, but does not like guns. This may seem weird, but there is also a connection. My husband is in the military and takes our dogs around with him while he is training his men sometimes off base, and when target practicing on our own property , and because of this, especially our older dog is afraid of guns or anyone carrying them. he will react in a aggressive manner the second a gun becomes present. Never has had a bad experience or been hurt by one, but still reacts. Maybe your dog is relating uniforms to an experience it has had?

The reason why dogs don't like UPS men and mailmen is because the UPS men and mailmen are coming on their territory. To the dogs they are trespassers.

Because dogs like to protect you and their territory, and they have found that after barking/growling at the mailmen, UPS men that they leave. Of course, your dog doesn't know that they would leave without the barking, so your dog thinks that they have scared them away successfully:)

The dog is protecting it's home, successfully, day in and day out. The offender shows up, the dog warns them they do not belong and the offender leaves. Points for the dog. The dog doesn't really hate them, it's just successful at making the person leave.

Because all mailmen are evil, and dogs sense it. They are plotting to take over the world.

The person in uniform is a stranger. The dog is protecting it's turf. He has learned that barking at the person makes them go away - at least that's what he thinks, anyway. This behavior can be corrected if you have willing people who visit your home to help you.

I think that distance doesnt seem to be the case here. Dogs have a great sense of smell. I believe it has to do with the protective nature of dogs and their "turf". They see someone invading their domain and they bark to warn the person to stay away.

They're coming up to the house, and they don't seem to have a connection with the owner. A friend or relative, you'll meet and greet and be all happy to see and clean the house for. Dogs know something's up and you're welcoming it. Not so with mail carriers, even if you're actually anxiously awaiting something in the mail!
