At least you said he just seems bored, not impatient and throwing a temper tantrum! I feel bad sometimes when I have to take my child to the store, but I just talk to her and stuff and try to teach her a little about things. Maybe he would like to look at a book or something? And the snack idea is a good one, it gives them something to do.

It really isn't your job to entertain your child 24/7. Perhaps if you could encourage your child to look around at the "stuff." You could talk with him as you shop and call his attention to other people, items in the store, pictures on the walls, etc. I always talk with the kids as I shop as a way to encourage them to stay with me and enjoy the trip.
Although I don't think it's a good idea to buy candy from the racks on the way out the door, sometimes for a special treat I allow the kids (as a team or individually) to pick out a special treat for supper as we go through the store. We don't pick it up off the shelf until we have filled the cart and are ready to go home. Then, we go back and get the one special item. This causes the child to have to think and make a plan rather than just grab items on a whim. It also replaces the "Can I have?" thing with "This might be good."
16 months is hard. Usually all a kid wants to do is chew on the safety belt and kick at his mom. I would try to get your child to become interested in his surroundings by talking with him and helping him name things. There is a lot of interesting stuff at the grocery store. If your child is bored, it may be because he really isn't noticing all the stuff that is going on around him.

I always make sure to have a fun little 20 minute stop for them stuffed in between the 'boring, adult' errands. a bit at the park, walking around the lovely outdoor garden store, and seeing the fish at the coi pond, little things like that. it is a nice break for the both of you. and it shows the child that spending the afternoon with mommy or daddy can be fun, even though errands are still getting done :-)

Simple solution that worked for my son: Buy some caribeners (those things they use in rock climbing) attache some small toys that your son enjoyes playing with (I used stuff from my son's baby eintein tummy play toy) Attach the caribeners to the cart. As you are going through the store your son can play with the toys, and you won't have to worry about him throwing them out to play the "mommy pick up" game.

Give him a toy to play with. They dont want to just sit in a buggy for hours at that age they are wanting to explore things by walking. Get him/her out for a lil while to walk around with you. Make him/her involved in the shopping and talk to him/her also. Make it fun for him/her not just for you.
