It uses both the Memory Stick and Memory Stick Pro formats. So, your SD, Compact Flash or other cards won't work in the Sony cameras. They like their proprietary cards- that way they get to make money on a separate purchase as well.

You really should pay extra and get the Memory Stick PRO cards, as otherwise the video and continuous shooting modes will be compromised. It needs the extra speed.

Sony devices usually use Sony style memory. Its usually purple and rectangular in shape with a knotch in one corner.
