In the Numbers account (31:1-54), Moses orders the killing of the boys and non-virginal women, but said to go ahead and keep the virgins for themselves.

And how were the men supposed to determine who were virgins and who are not so they can frelly kill them and torture?

In the culture at that time and to an extent even nowadays in some cultures, the virgins were determined as those unattached via some mating/ marriage arrangement. The next verse 18 is important , "keep all the young girls alive...". They were either pre puberty or had not been suited with a male.

lol. good question. You shouldn't expect fairy tales to be high on logic or common sense. In movies it's called the suspension of disbelief and is a popular plot point of the whole movie never comes together.

18But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.
