There are 856 of them on petfinder>>http://search.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi
so, they are common enough that people give them to shelters.
they are not so common in areas further from the South, in fact many people have never heard of them.
they are also known as Catahoulda Hog dog, Catahoula Mountain Cur, Catahoula cur, and many other names.
Here are lots of pictures. http://images.google.com/images?sourceid=navclient-ff&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGGL,GGGL:2006-18,GGGL:en&q=catahoula%20dog&sa=N&tab=wi

I know someone who breeds Catahoulas. They are mostly used to hunt wild hogs.
They are a SERIOUS hunting dog and do not make a very good pet for a non working home. A VERY 'hard' dog who needs a job and a firm hand. IMO way to much dog for your average pet home. I hate that this breed is now being sold for a family pet.

I have assisted in the rescue and transport of a couple of them, but I agree, they are not a well known breed.

This breed seems popular when you go to petfinder to adopt a dog.
Other breeds are sometimes mixed with this breed.

i have one and agree that they are not well known...
mosty in the south.
however they are very intelligent . assertive and are normally known as versitle working dogs and are capable of performing many tasks.
i own one and love her to death!!!! i'm extremely surprised on how easy she is to teach - she usually knows what i want from her and when i want it!!
they do need to release their energy though via "lots and lots of exercise".
chat me up.

I dont own one but have seen them before. My grandfather owned them. They are a Cur Breed. Most people who own them use them for hunting Coons, bear, hogs, etc.
