Thge vet cleaned out the maggots and put him on antibiotics, but there are still some maggots we can't seem to get out. The vet seems to think this is normal. I'm worried the cat needs some time to heal before he travels agian. Should I take him to a different vet?

we live in a rural area and I think that a racoon attacked him. We took him to a 24 hour emergency clinic in the next town over where thet cleaned and re-hydrated him. There were tons of masggots, but now there only seem to be a few stragglers that I can't quite get rid of. I've heard that maggots can't breed, so if there are no flies around they won't multiply......
He DEFINATLY won't be going outside anymore.....

Aren't the little wigglers fun? I hate maggots probably worse than anything I've seen on an animal. When I worked for the SPCA, we would clean the area then spray the maggots with a half/half solution of Adams flea spray. They are very very hard to flush out as they just seem to stick. Eggs are horrible too. The spray should kill them without hurting the cat. Certainly pick out the ones you can see and get to without doing any more damage to the cat. Keep on the antibiotics and keep the wound clean. You can also fill the wound with an ointment like Neosporin to help with the infection. Make sure the wound heals from the inside out and as it heals what maggots remain will die or fall out. Good luck.

Yuck! I've seen this many times before at the shelter I work at. I thought that they were supposed to flush out ALL the maggots, in case they die and rot inside the kitty. Maybe the body digests the maggots when they die in there. I may have heard that...ask the vet if that's what happens. The maggots eat infection, not healthy tissue (I think) so maybe the antibiotics IS all she needs. Phone some other vets to see what they think.

Oh no! That's so sad. I wouldn't let him outside until he is better. If you are worried about the maggots not going away or him not healing, definitely get a second opinion. Its better to be safe than sorry. I hope your kitty gets better soon.

Yes get a 2nd opinion. I've been a cat owner for 10 years and never saw that b4.

How the hell did that happen? And why the heck can't they get rid of the maggots? Are you serious?

believe it or not but maggots are kinda good. They eat dead meat, which means they will help the infection. They will go away when there is no more dead meat!

your cat may need some time to rest and recuperate before going to another vet. also, check to see if your vet has a good reputation
