When our ancestors came to this country, they didn't speak French, German, Italian or any other language for them. English is the language spoken in America and if you want to live here, then that language should be learned. If you choose to speak another language in the privacy of your home, that's your choice. However, American's shouldn't have to adapt or change for any one nationality choosing to make America home.

I also don't appreciate my elementary aged child being forced to learn Spanish in school. Our education system is lacking as it is and kids that young shouldn't be forced to learn another language. That should be a choice in later years. Let's get back to Reading, Writing and Arithmetic without forgetting Science and Social Studies. Some of which is barely covered while small kids learn a second language.

It's all part of the same issue--the coopting of America by foreigners. Not the kind who want to move here and become citizens, but the kind whose agenda involves either terrorism or making their own wealth--often at our expense--before going home to live comfortably. If you think they don't work the system, think again!
Protecting the borders should help to keep illegal aliens from coming across in such numbers, and reforming immigration policy could make identifying and keeping track of them easier.
Did you know that for every Latino immigrant, there are five to twenty using his social security number? Do you have any idea how many Mexican women sneak into the US, have their babies in emergency rooms at public--that means yours!--expense and then claim they have a right to stay because by law, that child is an American citizen? It is a major scam run often all over the country.
Promoting English? Language shapes society--this is axiomatic. Few things are so unifying as speaking the same tongue. Plus, if you were going to live in France or Germany or any other country, wouldn't it make sense to learn the language most of the country speaks? Yet these illegal Latino aliens not only want to come in here without recourse to proper procedure, to use our social services without paying for them, they also want us to have to learn their language, so they won't have to bother learning ours. If it don't sound like an invasion to you, you ain't been listening.

OK, if you cannot speak English, how are you getting a drivers license? If you cannot read the signs how do you know where you are going. It doesn't protect the borders or reform immigration if you already speak and write in English, but if Spanish is you claim to fame, then it may slow you down. It is just political nonsense that sounds good to voters in places that don't have many people immigrating anyway. It keeps Spanish and other people that don't speak English from voting those politicians out of office.

It does nothing for boarder protection other than provide a very easy way to identify illegals. "You no speaka English, you no belong here."

As for reforming immigration policy it will do several things.

1. Reduce the cost of education by eliminating the necessity for the same class in the same school being taught in two separate languages.
2. Reduce the cost of law enforcement by eliminating the necessity for bilingual officers.
3. Increase the education level of the prospective immigrants.

the 3 issues go hand in hand...if you want to reform immigration policy, you must promote English. If you want to reform immigration policy, you must start by protecting or closing down the borders.

It does nothing to protect our borders or reform our immigration policy. It is simply a way for some people to jump on the anti-immigrant bandwagon, which, if it weren't for immigrants, many of the so-called "Americans" wouldn't even have the right to be on that bandwagon!

Great question.

This country is the most uneducated first world country.

In Switzerland, for example, they recognize 3 languages, French, Italian and German. Why? Because the majority consists of these three groups. They embrace learning new languages.

But in this country we fear learning a new language. Thats just one of the reasons why our students rank so low on education compared with the rest of the world. Lets quit fearing and learn to live with one another?.

If your kids, or you for that matter, don't speak english you'll not be able to do well in this society. Forcing foriegners to speak english by "imersion" technique is the fastest and most effecient way for them to learn.

It's actually doing them a favor. English is pretty much the language between countries for the most part. it's the most common language out there.

One of many reasons limits are needed on immigration (beyond drain on education, etc.) is to protect the culture of the country so those who do NOT choose to move to another country do not suddenly wake up to find themselves living in one. Slower rates of immigration encourage assimilation rather than balkanization.

If you choose to move to another country you should leave behind your xenophobia to assimilation into the culture you are joining. If you are illegally in another country, you should realize that this point would only hurt your case for amnesty in a country that liked its own culture the way it was.
