by trying to outlaw things like stem cell research, because they believe it to be a sin they are condeming millions of people to death. in a case like this where the sin is only harmful to the sinner, shouldn't believers leave things like this to their god to deal with?

and stem cell research can be done without aborted fetuses.

i can understand laws against things like murder and theft, but why do you want to make things that do not hurt others illeagal or force people into your ideas of morality?

do you feel that god wants you to take away others free will. if he doesn't take it a way, why do you?

carol m. did you even bother to read the part about them being able to do stem cell research without having to use aborted fetuses, or do you only see what you want to see and read what you want to read. it is fools like you who would have us all living in the dark ages.

Because some People in the christian faith, just cannot stand having even one un- converted soul out there, They have tried to force their ways on people since it's conception, even to the point of torture and death.

I don't know about the god thing, but i do know that here in america we're a country of laws. The majority rules, most of the time, through our voices and our votes. If ones bias leads him to vote one way or another, there's nothing wrong with that. Everyone has a bias, whether it's religious or non, or any of the other millions of different bias we as humans have. Now, as far as your free will argument is concerned, who are you to judge someone about what they believe? Obviously there aren't millions of people condemned to death; that's an exaggeration, and no one is taking others free will, that's a ridiculous argument. You just seem pissed because everyone doesn't fit into your world view. If you believe stem cell research is right, then call your congressman, vote, and support your cause. Also, don't assume you know and feel what god wants. That's absurd arrogance on your part. I like your other point, step cell research can be done without aborted fetuses, or to some, unborn human beings, and to others, babies stem cells. It's just cheaper and fresher body parts. It's all about the money, son. Everyone pushes the emotional issue and doesn't look clearly at the big picture. Your bias blinds you. Shoot, go ahead and donate your own stem cells. It IS your free will to do so, you know.

This question mixes up two different issues. One is the rightness or wrongness of stem cell research, and the other is the question of free will as a general philosophical question.

"Interfering with free will" is done all the time, as in making it illegal to murder, to steal, and so on. People find it easier and safer when there are social contraints on "free will."

Believers are trying to impose their religious decisions upon scientific research. Or not. Depends on whether an embryo, that is, a fertilized egg under development into an actual fetus, is a living person.

Fertilized eggs quite often become aborted spontaneously, usually without anybody being aware of it. Nobody has a funeral even if it is realized that the pregnancy did not "take." And there are quite a few embryos that are discarded after fertilization treatments - the first one or two embryos developed for the couple happen to work, so they throw out the remainder they made for them. Nobody seems to give a damn about those, either.

So believers should be getting after the fertility treatment people and the people who toss their left overs away also, to be consistent. But then, believers are not known for consistency.

Why do some non-believers also disagree with stem-cell research? Just because you can do it, doesn't mean you should. And I have yet to see a system that doesn't use aborted fetuses. You murderer, taking the lives of millions without even them seeing the light of day. Same reasoning, isn't it? The human race has survived without this research, and can continue to do so. We are not God, so let's stop trying to be God with cloning & stem-cell research. Free will? Aren't you trying to force us into thinking what you believe? Is THAT free will?

Maybe your argument would be better if it was researched and not presented in such a biased manner. Grow up and realize everyone has their opinions & religions. Just because you don't believe, doesn't mean we are in the wrong. Reality check : maybe you are.

Actually no one can take a person's free will away. Even thought there are laws against certain things it is still your choice to do them and accept the consequences or not do them because of the consequences.
That being said, there must be laws in place to attempt to protect the innocent. While stem cell research may be able to be done without aborted fetuses it is more likely that it won't. I think we have to be careful of the slippery slope effect. If someone who doesn't believe abortion is wrong in their own mind has a loved one who is terribly ill and thinks that stem cells are the answer what's to stop them from becoming pregnant just to harvest those cells?

Bush wasn't outlawing stem cell research ... he said that there shouldn't be government FUNDING for 'embryonic' stem cell research. So I think the premise of your question is wrong.

Bush is actually the only president who has funded stem cell research ... he just wants them to continue using the same lines that have already been established, rather than destroying new embryos.

You need to do some research ...

Which sins are you talking about that are only harmful to the sinners? All 'sins' affect others ... adultery, murder, lying, etc.

And we really already do legislate morality ... or else, how did there come to be laws against murder, stealing etc. Why should we interfere with people's 'free will' ... why not let there just be anarchy as everyone does as they please?

I am glad you brought this up! I was thinking the same thing yesterday!
Even if they used aborted fetuses at least they would not be wasted!
BELIEVERS as you call them really need to make others see the TRUTH because God thinks they are lazy if they do not collect US up!
It is true, they will not give up. The more they collect it is like they will a closer seat with 'God' or something!
Well I am not buying it!
People have a gift of KNOWLEDGE and scientist have worked hard on trying to save people's lives and make what life we do have better.
True, not all go about research the RIGHT ways but most do.
BELIEVERS think that science is a SINFUL TOOL of the devil and that is so much crap !
It is like magic, in fact it was magic long ago, but anyway there is LIGHT MAGIC and DARK MAGIC, and how it is used and what for is what is important not that it is sinful!
WE have just as much right to let science find cures as they have to sit in the church of their choice and be ILL and LET GOD heal them!
We have the right to worship anything anyone or nothing at all!
And when the government stops allowing the CHURCH to rule them then things will get better!
Until then they are FORCING THEIR WILLS UPON US!
If they want god to heal them then OK let him do it...
BUT let us have our science and medicine and do it our way!

They know not what they do. Forgive the fools.
It is not for us to judge others, it is how god will judge the fruits of your labors. People tend to feel like its there place to be the hand that teaches evil a lesson or for saving the world. Without "evil", there could not be quote "good" for the word good implies judgement and acknowledges the other halfs existance.
If our "fate" is determined by the lord, then how can free will be possible? How can we know what we do when we cannot fully understand purpose. How can I assume what I am doing is my "fate" if I decide to do it? I cant. Our abilty to understand gods reasons are limited, but we can take comfort in knowing the love is limitless. Why do people interfere with things? I couldnt tell you. More importantly though, why do they if god is the ultimate judge and we cannot fully understand our own place in this existance. I think god wants me to shut up and sit back, and let it do all the work. There is nothing god needs me to do that it/he/whatever u call it cant do better. I am nothing compared to a supreame being, if I truely believe, why do I have to lift a finger?
Why does god need my puny little efforts? Why do I think I can help god? Would god stop existing if I didnt stop some people?
Would it change gods plan to not interfer, or to interfere.
No way to fully understand. I just try to do as little as possible to interfere for if forgiveness and compassion are the way, then I am tainted and anything I say will corrupt those who dont understand. I dont wanna be responsible for giving some one the wrong message that some one else wanted to give this person.
Ever play that game Telephone In elementary school?
Ever notice how it was just a bunch of whispering by the time it got back to you? And that was just in one room.

Some non-believers are interfering by trying to outlaw things like stem cell research because they know this is unnatural and they agree with some believers who see this as murder. Some believers do realize that there others options for as stem research and agree with it. No one forces anything on atheists, agnostics or cults. We have senator and representatives that are non believers who you can contact instead of complaining and blaming every believers who you are prejudice against for a religion on what you see as interference. If you say, you are a freethinker,do something about it. God gave freewill as a gift. Use It! Don't be naive. Talk to your fellow sects and write your congressman or whoever. You may have converted some people on here to Atheism. Ask them to join in with your cause unless your motive here is to bash believers only!

Free will: The God-given right to choose between good and evil.
One is free to choose sin or do as God wills.

No one can take away or even interfere with free will.
The concept of free will has nothing to do with stem-cell research. Furthermore, the lack of tinkering with stem-cells will not cause the death of millions--we didn't have or need it before, and we don't need it, now.

first of all. the protection of innocent life is sacrosant to the belief of a divine entity.

that said, there are many avenues for collecting stem cells that do not require the growth and death of a fetus. the emnionic fluids that can be harvested from the placenta and from the umbilical cord are rich in the the very cells that others want us to harvest.

if ever there were and altar to satan upon this earth, it is the abortion table wherein the blood of tens of thousands are sacrificed.

i do not agree with outlawing ALL abortion. there are cases where the parent must make a decision to save their own life, etc.

what i disagree with is: allowing abortion as a means of contraception.

and it is not God taking away our free will, rather it is because He gave us free will, that we have this issue in the first place.
