My son is ten and his room is tiny. It is so messy he doesn't even know what to do with it. He keeps everything (gets that from me)and I need to decide what to save for him for later when he is older and what can go.

When he is at school or not home go to it. If it is junk or broken throw it. If it was expensive and/ or special box it and mark the container outside so you will always know what is in the box.If you leave these decisions up to a 10 yr.old nothing will get removed from his room. He will probably appreciate the extra space for his new and up to date toys and belongings.

get a small plastic tote box, about 18in x 6 in.

tell him to go through his stuff and keep only the most important things that remind him of the most important life events. tell him that he can only keep what can fit in the box, with the cover on.

get rid of everything else except maybe what can fit (NEATLY) on shelves, in a closet, hung on the wall in a frame, etc.

Moreover children learn by example. If you want him to be clean, perhaps youd be best to do the same!

random samples of artwork & school papers. only most favorite toy from each year past. get rid of everything that's too small or doesn't fit. anything that hasn't been used in over a year.
