On Discovery Channel, they said he wasn't actually a "carpenter." (as it had been translated previously)
He was actually just a handyman, doing odd jobs for people here & there.

No, probably not even close. The people that were WELL OFF back in those days were the KINGS, and that is about it. A carpenter could make a humble living, but that kid was a humble man, and it apparently sufficed. I think his Father's influence drove him to CREATE THINGS in a fashion that he could. But, he was well off from having some wonderful friends and a generally happy life.
Then again, there was that NAILING TO THE CROSS thing which made for some misery. At least people see it as a sign of God's love for us and many Christians have been inspired to do great work such as Mother Theressa.
I suspect that even if he WERE WELL OFF he would have given away MOST OF HIS UNNEEDED money to those less fortunate than himself. That kid had a heart of almost pure gold. I think he wanted to work to help the cause of humanity, and he liked carpentry despite the low wages.
I am a carpenter and often do little more than feed and house myself as do other of my tradesmen friends. Somehow, those worthless alleged bandits in Congress make out pretty darn well. Where, oh where has justice gone these days?

No, being a carpenter does not mean he had money. Carpenters today, no matter how skilled, are rarely wealthy. My husband is an expert trim carpenter and has worked in million dollar homes. He now works in a different field because the market for his skill is not enough to support a family. Also, the Bible states that Jesus' family was poor.

What kind of name changing, picture changing, identity changing, abundantly changing human are you? Lordie Lordie Lordie. GET IT RIGHT MAN.
Have you never heard of the Carpenter's man????
Jesus was the unknown third Carpenter, and people thought it was only Richard and Karen.
I mean how naive do you have to be to think the new testament was referring to Jesus being a tradesman?

Carpenters then did not get paid nearly as well as they do today. Jesus' family was very poor.
And to pp, don't ever call dear St. Joseph Jesus' "illegitimate" father! What blasphemy. He was his foster father. An illegitimate father is one who conceives a child out of wedlock.

I believe his father Joseph was a carpenter, and depending on what you read, made a handsome living at it.

I believe Jesus was pretty well off with what he earned. I also believe that Jesus worked to help and give us a demonstration of how to make a living.

Jesus wasn't a carpenter. His illigitimate father Joseph was. Carpenters, like construction workers only make decent money now thanks to unions, but none of them are rich.

He was most likely very well off, for a 2nd class citizen as the Jews were treated by the Romans. But he found his calling anyway.
