The National Weather Service tabulates data from cities around the country using a two-letter identification system. Los Angeles was designated L.A. Early airlines simply copied the system but decided upon a 3 letters (17,576 different combinations) so they added 'X' to many of the existing Weather service designations: (LA-> LAX, Phoenix PH -> PHX, Portland PD-> PDX, etc.) Newer airports used the first three letter (ATL for atlanta) or other combinations.

It stands for Los Angeles International.
You answered your own question.
I don't know why they didn't use LAI, unless that stands for another airport somewhere else. Perhaps Louisiana International.

It's just the international airport code for the L.A. airport. It doesn't really stand for anything. Toronto's airport code is YYZ. Not an acronym, just a code.
