Barnstormers.com is one place to start. You can also check out ebay..I've seen them there as well.
Carefull though...Frank Robinson is not too big on selling parts to rehabilitate wrecks...

Hear of google? Theirs tons of Airshops all around the US and in California. And no why would it matter if its used? Just be expecting a road trip sometimes if buying a Aircraft, They can be 100 to 600 miles away from where you are for the one you are looking for. Some people travel cross country just to get a plane they want and fly it back to their hometown.

I've had good luck getting airplane parts from Kenny Faeth of Sacramento, CA (You may have seen him on Mythbusters)
I dunno if he deals in rotorcraft parts though.
If your friend just wants a cheap helicopter this is probably not a good idea, though.
