The best Over the Counter for me is Aleve. But sometimes it's so painful that I actually need Prescription pain medicine in combination with Advil or Aleve.
Very painful periods can be a sign of a serious illness and you need to consult a doctor right away. If it's determined all is well but you just happen to be one of the lucky ones with a crappy live altering menstrual cycle then your doctor will tell you the best thing to do for the pain. I am going to start taking a very low dose birth control pill to control some of the pain and heaviness even though I've had a tubal and can't have any more children. Just some thoughts that you really need to talk over with a doctor. You don't have to suffer. you have a right to be pain free. Oh, another thought is ask your doctor if you can take a pill or birth control medicine that will allow you to menstruate every 3 months instead of every month. Of course, any serious illness needs to be ruled out as soon as possible. don't let it go any longer and stop your pain.
You deserve it!
Good Luck,
Sarah

Well they really don't have many to choose from specifically for menstrual pains. When I was younger I used to get really bad pain, I would roll up on the floor crying for 3 days. I only knew of Midol, which helped a little but didn't solve the problem. I now use Advil which I find works best for me. It seems to work fast and the relief it provides lasts the longest. Mind you since I have had children my pains are very mild. I also have heard of some women going to the doctor for a prescription. I also found hot teas, hot bathes and hot water bottles provided comfort. It is also good to make sure that everything is okay by getting checked by your doctor.

Midol doesn't work for everyone. Pamprin always worked best for me. I used to be doubled over in pain with cramps. Actually, I ended up taking Birth Control Pills to help alleviate the cramps and they worked wonders. If your cramps are truly that painful, that may be a step to take. There are some very low hormonal BC pills out now, but you'll just have to do some research and see what's right for you. If that's out of the question, PAMPRIN all the way!

Ibuprofen (Advil, Midol, generic). Dosage: 800mg every 4 hours that the pain persists. Also place a hot pad on your abdomen. It will relax your muscles and ease the cramping. Sleep if you can until the pain subsides.

If none of these work you should see a doctor.

I don't mean to be a perv or anything, but a really good orgasm is the very best and natural way to get rid of cramps. If you get a good one, you won't have any cramps for the rest of the day or night. But when orgasms aren't readily available, heating pads and pamprin do the trick, but not as well.

Take some advil, then take a hot bath. After that, lay down with a heating bad and sleep or watch a movie.

Pamprin (but that makes me all sleepy), chocolate soy milk, hot water bottle held close to the spot while I sit, soaking in a hot tub for a bit.

Ponstan.
You need it prescribed to you by your doctor.
It works awesome!!!!
It takes away cramps, back pain, moodiness.
Every fun symptom that comes with your period
I swear by it.
I've gotten other girl friends to try it and that's all they use now.
Again it works wonders.

As for other remedies...
Cold pack
Heating Pad
Warm bath
Massage.

go to your ob doctor, if they are severe enough he will put you on birth control pills and they help tremendously as well as shorten the length of your periods if you truly have hormonal issues
