I was baptized by submersion in Jesus' name on New Years Eve and received the gift of the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues. No, I don't know what the words meant that were coming out of my mouth, but they were of a higher power, and we're not meant to know what they mean. (Some people believe it's the language of angels). There is such thing as "tongues and interpretation", where someone begins speaking in tongues, and another person speaks what was said in English. They are the words of Jesus, and it is amazing! When you say that they "don't recall", do you mean that they don't know what they said? Or that they "black out" or something? Jesus is a gentleman, and does not force himself on anyone. They can stop whenever they want, it's not like you're being overcome by an unseen force and have no control. It's actually an awesome experience...I've never felt anything like it in my life!! If you're searching for truth, find a church that teaches the Book of Acts. Repent, be baptized, and receive the gift of the Holy Ghost...and be saved!! Lord bless!!!

I have witnessed many people being baptized, both in water and in the Holy Ghost. In the book of Acts, God gave the Holy Ghost to people. The evidence of the infilling of the Holy Ghost is to speak with other tongues. The Holy Ghost is the Comforter that was spoken of by Jesus. I myself have been filled with the Holy Ghost. When I pray in the Holy Ghost, I am praying in a language that I have never heard of or spoken in everyday life. I am not sure what language it is but I do know that it is a gift from God and that He hears and knows exactly what I am saying. It is a way for your spirit to communicate with God. It is hard to explain but a very life changing experience. I can not just start doing it like in everyday conversation. It is a point you get to in prayer. I hope this helps. I am trying to explain it but it is a hard thing to put into words. It's much better understood by experience
**Just had to add this after reading the previous posts: THere are two different types of Toungues. One is for evidence when the Holy Ghost is in your life. The other is for the edifiaction of the church and is done with an interpreter. They are two totally different things. As I said before though, to understand it you must experience it. I have seen the other type of toungues with an interpreter also. God gives a message to His people using someone else. It is very humbling.

Yeah, people can speak in tongues. They can just start speaking a language they never spoke before in their life. It can be any language. It happens when you are filled with the Holy Spirit, and you feel so happy and joyful you just can't take it. My mom had one before. It doesn't only happen when you are getting baptized. I could tell it was real because my mom doesn't like attention, so I was surprised when I saw her crying of happiness. I was baptized, and it definitely feels like a cleansing. I was baptized only a couple of years ago, so I still remember. It was great. God is amazing, when He can show you things that other people who don't believe in Him will never get to experience. You just have to tell God you love Him and believe in Him, and you have to mean it, and that's it. You are guaranteed a place in heaven unless you fall away from Him, or you never meant it in the first place. And you also have to live according to the Bible. People make it seem so much harder than it is.... Oh, well, everyone won't get it.... Hope this helps!!

Speaking in tongues happened when the apostles received this gift at Pentecost to spread the faith to people of all languages. The apostles knew what they were saying because they were preaching to people to convert them. 3000 people were baptized on that day because of their preaching in different languages.

Your father did not speak in tongues. He was most likely speaking gibberish because he wanted so badly to receive this gift. Historically, the apostles and great saints were the only ones to get it. So many people say, "look at me! I can speak in tongues" and then just speak gibberish because no one can call their bluff. It's really idiotic. If they could speak in tongues, they would know what they were saying and it would be for the purpose of converting another. If no one is there to understand it, what is the point in having it? It's made up.

Yes, I witnessed both my goddaughter and my daughter being baptized. It is a wonderful thing to see a real baptism. It is said in latin and there is an exorcism because we are born as children of Satan (because of original sin). It is wonderful to hold a freshly baptized baby who is perfection in the eyes of God. :)

yes i have witnessed others being baptized and speaking in tongues. it's a personal prayer between you and god. it's a feeling that is hard to explain without experience. the bible says that the holy ghost was sent to us as a comforter.i would never speak out of context about it because the bible says that blaspheming of the holy ghost is unforgivable. you can get forgiveness of every thing except speaking against it and understanding what it is.

Yes, I have witnessed this but they usually know what's going on afterwards.

It is the holy ghost and speaking tongues is a gift; not everyone in their life will do it. I don't understand it and I never will. Just like with any language you need to know what you are saying so that you don't say the wrong thing.

If your dad doesn't remember try asking someone else. They know what they are saying. It means something.

The closest I ever came to someone I thought was speaking in tongues was in church. We were praying for a person that was sick and I heard the sound like a dove from the person next to me. My Dad said he was speaking in tongues.
When I accepted Jesus and was baptized at 9 years old. When I came up from the water I was so overwhelmed with complete joy. That's the only way I can describe it. Joy and Peace.

I was baptized in ice cold water. When I came out of the water I could hardly breathe, let alone shout or talk in tongues. But I did receive the Holy Ghost.

Here is the biblical answer to tongues.

It is not gibberish that no one around can understand, It is the act of speaking, and others around can all understand, even if they all speak other languages and do not understand the language of the person standing next to them, both of these people can understand "in their own language" what the main speaker is saying.

Acts chapter 2 starting at verse 1 to 16.

And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house whre they were sitting.
And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with othere tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance
And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men , out of every nation under heaven.
Now when this was noise abroad, the multitude came together and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
And they marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?

Basically tongue means language in our modern definition.

So if you speak english, Spanish etc, it woud be your native tongue or language.

I have seen many people get baptized and have baptized many people and none of them ever spoke in tongues. I still think baptism is the most spiritually significant act a Christian can do once they believe. What I love is that we do nothing but get wet and God does the rest - He forgives our sins and gives us the gift of the Holy Spirit. those are pretty awesome gifts for simply laying limp while somebody dunks you in water!
